Don't forget that some companies have a NCD accelerator scheme, where you get a years NCD for 10 months cover. Just be aware that it's not always possible to switch the NCD between other insurers.

Yes admiral do that but it's not transferable to other companies so decided not to go for it after the price hike on the last policy - might get a years NCD but if price doubles a real years NCD to take elsewhere is much better :T
  • I think you'll find AIM positively encourage young drivers, they even offer a discount. (not sure if they still do but worth a look)

No, they give a discount of around 10% for one off payment by credit card or you can have no discount plus an interest charge to pay monthly. ;)

Price on screen was £962 to pay in one go by card, or call in for monthly price - monthly price worked out at just a couple of quid short of £400 more.

I'll look into that, he's got pass plus but there are so few companies that seem to offer a discount for it and the ones that do are ridiculously high prices to start with anyway.

I have never had insurance in my own name except for a business working vehicle. but never for a family/commuting car. That was always done with OH, and we built up "our" no claims initially by insuring TPO, this was back in the day (15 - 20 years) when there really was a difference in premium between TPO and comp. And before OH and I started living together I always drove mums car on her policy. Nowadays I find the difference between comp and TPO is only about £8 - £15 on a £180 premium, so not worth going for TPO anymore.

I suppose if the premiums are £2K - £4K then TPO might still be worth it. Even today. But if you can, just keep driving as a named driver until you are 25 or so.

Another thing Wig reminded me of. When I took out my Admiral policy, I was offered to upgrade to comp for I think an extra £200 or so. All well and good, then I ask how much the excess is - £650. Err my car's not worth much more than that, there wouldn't be any point me claiming on it, especially as I'd probably lose out in the long run from inflated premiums afterwards.
Sorry to hear my tricks didn't work for you OP. I must have just been lucky.

Yes, because the onscreen price includes the discount, and the monthly installments price doesn't!

    Just for interest:

18 year old male, 1 years NCB, license since december 08, Proton Wira 1.5, Group 11, 20,000 miles pa, TPF&T.

    Full Manual:
    £1588.97.

    Pass Plus:
    £1430.08.

    IAM:
    £1588.97.

Prices checked using Confused - cheapest for all 3 was Quinn...

Was considering the IAM but can't find a minimum age (last time remember it being 21 - i'm only 18) and apparently my insurance will now go UP doing it. !!!!!!!

Their multicar policy doesn't work for us at all - we have one other car currently which costs the wife about £350 a year to insure. If we go to multicar policy with admiral the combined cost was over £3k  and that was with just me and the missus on her car and all three on the other one.
You're not alone on that score. Tried them for a quote for multicar before. For myself and my OH, with our respective cars, I could get policies for around £300 each, or multicar for around the grand mark.... I think not :)

When I was 18 I paid £11 a year for a 1937 MG TA. That was in 1963. Those were the days.......
