Sorry to butt in - I'm sure it may be covered somewhere in this thread already - but is it worth spending a lot of money on a slow cooker or is a £8.99 one from Argos sufficient? Don't need anything too big as just me & my 3 year old.

Would be great to come home from work & not have to start preparing something from scratch. I like making soups - is it good for this?. Also are there any sc cookbook recommendations - I'm not great with meat cooking!

Just had a nosy :D is it this one http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/4201252/Trail/searchtext%3ESLOW+COOKER.htm looks fine to me.

If there are only the two of you you will also be able to batch cook and freeze :j I prefer the oval ones as its easier to get a chicken into than a round one.
Good price as well atm. It is great to use for soups and stews. Meat always turns out really tender and falls off the bone and it seems to go a lot further.

Hoping u lovely people can help me....I am for the 1st time ever doing a beef stew and using the s/c:j
How long do i need to cook dumplings for if it is on slow? I havent ever made dumplings, only my nan is coming to stay and its her fav meal!
Thanks in advance for ur help :T

    Hi emmylou,

i`ve never made dumplings in mine but i`m sure that i`ve read on this very thread that people have put them in anything to an hour in advance on low or less on high, just pop them onto the top of the stew. When making stew cut up the veggies quite small as root veg seems to take a while to soften and cook properly.

I don`t have a slow cooker recipe book but just adapt other recipes, there are many fantastic things that others have cooked listed in the thread so if you have a read back a few pages you will see the type of thing that i mean.

There`s also a slow cooker recipe thread here too,

may save you a few pennies if you can find what you need here without having to buy a book.

Today in my slow cooker I have 9 lamb chops(reduced from £5 to £3.55),potatoes, onions, carrots and green beans with a stock cube and some dried mixed herbs.Hoping it turns out OK.

I also bought other meat reduced in Tesco which is now in the freezer and will be used throughout the week :)

That sounds absolutely fine. I like to add 6 tablespoons of red lentils (thickens liquid) and a tablespoon of barley as well because it leaves me with a beef broth soup after the beef is eaten.

thanks, yeah it was fine but did buy some lentils today ~(before i read your reply lol) and will use them in my bolognese tomorrow :)

We have just demolished portuguese braised steak with onions from mine. OH said it was very bland and watery so may not do it in the sc in future.

Today in my SC I made...........falafel, and believe it or not, they came out really well. In fact it was the first time I managed to achieve nice falafel - previous attempts involving shallow frying or the oven have always resulted in disintegrated or soggy specimens. These were great! Even though I didn't quite believe it would work when I started. I will definitely be making them again.
