Sorry if this has been asked before.

Can anyone recommend a good slow cooker? I've not had one before. I've read reviews for different makes/models and some reviewers give 5* for a particular cooker, whilst someone else will indicate the opposite. I guess much is down to personal preference. I intend using mine mainly to bulk cook i.e. enough stew or curry or whatever for several meals. Is a big cooker OK if you don't "fill it"? Thanks.

Did 2 rolled pork shoulder joints on Friday (not the cheapest so not very MSE but I was DYING to try the recipe) in the SC and made pulled pork. It sat in the SC on a bed of onions and cooked for 8 hours, after being basted liberally with a mix (will post the recipe if anybody fancies it). I basted it after 4 hours, but only because I was at home. Very nice - OH commented that it might have to become a regular Saturday night treat!

    Yes please :)

Today: Left over leg of lamb, pots, carrots, leeks, swede, parsnip, swiss boulion, bit of worcester sauce, bit of soup mix.
Boiled up the swede, carrots and soup mix a bit to just soften them, threw everything in the SC. Trying to make a sort of Lancashire hotpot soup x stew for tonight, may add dumplings later or have it with crusty bread to mop up all the (hopefully) lovely juices.

SC no 2 - a small one. A couple of pears, white wine - just because it was open and there, spot of sugar. Have it with - not sure yet - maybe icecream or cream or custard.

I've got Tesco's own, as have quite a few others, don't think anyone has complained about them, it's fine:) At the moment it's £12 I think, don't see any reason to pay more really.
Often it has just enough for 2 of us, no problems.

hi there can I join in

claregre I too would like your 'pulled pork' recipe as I saw one on 'baker brothers' programme that looked interesting but dont know how to adapt for slow cooker

theres nothing in my slow cooker today as we're packed full of slow cooker leftovers in the freezer.

tonight for me and DH is leftovers of a kind of 'spanish chicken' I did yesterday involving rubber chicken, chorizo, tomatoes potatoes red pepper garlic.

DS (15 months ) is having leftover slow cooker lasagne which has been going down well

oh and on subject if slow cookers, I have a 6.5L 'cookworks' one from argos which was 21.99

pros- its big, can fit a big joint etc, whole crockpot and lid are dishwasher safe
cons - its SO big I sometimes have to put the dishwasher on again just for the crockpot!!! (not very OS) or wash by had which is pain in butt. oh, and, sometimes it 'blasts' a recipe. with a recipe where it says it should be 8 hrs on low, it is usually done in 5/6hrs i just have to test the meat, so thats taken a bit of getting used to.....

Today - 1lb of shin of beef, 2 carrots, 2 leeks, some Knorr beef stock pots and a splash or water. Having just cleared out the chicken stock from yesterdays slow cooked chicken, will now use that stock and some of the left over chicken to make a lovely garlicicky chicken soup (OH has a stinking cold)
Please forgive me if my comments seem abrupt or my questions have obvious answers, I have a mental health condition which affects my ability to see things as others might.
  • First time posting on this thread, I got a SC for Xmas and just getting used to it now, have enjoyed some lovely chicken meal (creamy tarragon the best) then a gorgeous macaroni cheese with smoked haddock on Tuesday. Today I have the chicken carcass in there making a (hopefully) yummy chicken and veg soup :)
