In my slow cooker today.... part 2

I thought I'd share my best-ever slow cooker recipe: I invented it the other day and it went down very well.
Several large pork sausages - part-cook first and drain off fat, chop into chunks.
Stir in a jar of bolognese sauce and a tin of chopped tomatoes, a green pepper chopped small and a drained tin of butterbeans. That's all. Serve with cous cous or something...
I pre-heated the liquids in the microwave to save time but of course you could just put them in as they are.
Thanks for the inspiration miggy. I did sausage casserole in mine yesterday after reading your post but ended up putting lots more in to use things up.
Also tried something new that I haven't done before in the SC. Added half a cup of oats (proper rolled oats not powdery ready*brek) after I read on various threads that people use it to "bulk out" meat dishes. Anyway thought I'd give it a go. Seemed to just disappear but thickened it nicely so didn't have to add any thickening of any sort, was really nice.
Had rice pud in my SC today, a great big yummy 2pinter!0 -
I have a 3litre Breville SC and all ok cooking wise but my problem is it spits everywhere. I have tried making sure the crockpot lip is dry when I put the lid on but after a while water builds up around the lid and then bubbles and spitting occur leaving puddles and spits everywhere.
Anyone else with this problem and what can I try to help stop it?
Mine used to do this (though not as bad!) - now I sit a pair of oven gloves on it and it stays putA positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effortMortgage Balance = £0

Didn't see this thread before now and it's exactly what I was looking for as I've just bought a Tesco £9 slow cooker! It's just as good as the morphy Richards one I've had in the past0

Hiya
The slow cooker is deliberately designed so that the steam condenses as it hits the lid - and the water then provides a seal between the lid and the pot.
The spitting problem arises if there is a "large" gap between the two. Steam pressure builds up - and then pops out through this gap, and that's why you get spitting.
The thing is that for a fair number of slow cookers the rim of the cooking pot is not flat and level and so you get a different sized gap in places. The thing to do is to move the lid around - there's always some space available for movement - and see if you can find a place where the spitting reduces or stops.
On mine - if I put the lid dead centre it spits. If I slide the lid as far to the left as I can - no spitting. It's trial and error I'm afraid but there's usually a way to make things better.

The peeps that have the £9 jobby from Mr T... do you cook on high or low? I mean for all day, 8-9 hour meals. I bought one recently and have used it a couple of times but I always have an internal wobble over which to use and end up fiddling. Mostly because I see a lot of people on the OS board/recipes cooking on low, but the instructions that came with the cooker seem to suggest that low would be more of a warming function, and high is for cooking.. also I keep reading that you have to get to know your cooker and that they differ so... all in all, a little confused :embarasse
Edit: Also just realised maybe I hijacked the wrong post, sorry!0 -
Ironic that a SC thread is ging too fast for me to keep up!I ended up putting a tin of pineapples in juice in with the gammon and a carton of apple juice .... will see what happens!
Oh that sounds gorgeous!moom1nmamma wrote: »I'm normally against veg in a tin but I use my slow cooker at least twice a week and since I started using tesco large tinned new potatoes I'm never going bk, they hold their shape/taste no matter how long I have the SC on for, delicious!!
Thanks for this, potatoes are something that haven't worked for me so far so this could be what I need. Just got back from Mr T's, but I expect I'll be in again soon!Miggy
