no advice for the question but your slowcooker was a bargain - where did you get it from?!?!!

It was a promotion at T*sco - I think it may still be running? A friend bought one for £10 there a while ago and I think the normal price is about £12 - still a bargain!

It looks nice (oval, stainless steel finish, glass lid), cooks well and has a removeable 'crock pot' that will go in the dishwasher. For some reason the lid isn't dishwasher-able so I have to rescue it and do it by hand before my family risk its wellbeing by bunging it in with everything else!

I did my own little critique of it here if anyone is going bargain hunting. :)

I'm intrigued by the thought of cooking gammon in coke or ginger wine - I bet they are both amazing! And great for winter when you need to feel warmed up. :D

ETA - the Which? review came down rather hard on it, but I read customer reviews and everyone seemed to like it - and I agree with those who felt positive.

The recipe said ginger ale, which I don't have. Found some ginger wine from last xmas and topped it up with water. Fingers crossed !!!!!! Have also read coke can be used instead.

Im quite curious about the gammon in coke – might give it a whirl on Sunday!

Strange question but do you boil the gammon first to get rid of the salt or do you just unwrap it and bung it straight in the slowcooker with coke?!

I just put it in the slow cooker straight from the packet. I have just had some and the salt had been cooked out of it. It was delicious and given the price of joints of meat I will be cooking this more often. Popped into morrissons for a "cheap joint" today and was shocked at the prices. Even Brisket which should be cheap was £7 for a small piece.

The price of brisket in Morrisons is rocketing, not long ago it was £4.80 per kilo, the it went up to £5.50 then £6.00 and then £6.50 all in a few weeks.

I`ll have to check what it is now when i go tomorrow but i suspect that i won`t be buying it much now, their braising steak is the same. It used to be good meat for a reasonable price but i`ve started buying most of my meat from Aldi now.

I`ve made it a few times in the slowcooker and its good because you don`t have to stand over it and it doesn`t matter if you take the lid off for stirring.

The time varies massively, i run it overnight and then in the morning turn it up onto high and take the lid off to evaporate the liquid - this can take a while depending on how much there is to start with.

Doubt i`ll go back to making it on the hob tbh unless i`m needing some quickly.

Thanks Sunnyday I have to cook with LPG as no mains gas so it makes sense to use my slo-cooker for this I'll definitely try it.

Was going to write exactly that - have been doing cooking it in coke on gas stove for years - you can use ginger beer, or orange juice or a drop of sherry too. But coke (full fat) is cheapest!
