Well after going and investing in a shiny new Crock pot saute 5.7l I have now cooked my first SC meal !!!!

Vickyj how did you find cooking with the Saute 5.7L? I have finally ordered a slow cooker after dithering for a couple of years (and reading the threads on here lots) and gone for the same one due to the timer and the hob safe pot, however have saw a few reviews claiming it cooked too fast.

I poured most of the stock away, but added a little as sauce which made eating brown rice so much easier.
If i'm around, for the last 1/2-1 hour of cooking I take off the lid and add a little flour/gravy/fine potato to thicken the sauce up.

I've currently got an italian style concoction of herbs, veg, berlotti beans & pasta in mine. I'm going to add some chopped tomatoes and olives for the last hour uncovered. Yum!

  • Butternut soup for the weekend in my slow cooker today.

I have always cooked casseroles and joints in my slow cooker, but for some reason only cooked soup on the hob. I made a lentil soup in the slow cooker the other day, and was so pleased with how much tastier it was.

So now slow-cooked soup is one of my latest obsessions...especially with lots of celery in it for some reason. :)

.Thinking of putting some chopped apple in too:undecided. Had lots of apples gave me for my hm wine but i'm sure i could spare a couple for tonights tea

I make a really quick apple sauce by: melting some butter than adding grated peeled apple and half quantity of grated onion into a small pan. simmer for 2-5 mins until soft and then serve.

Even my friends who aren't keen are apple sauce love this.

  • I am planning on cooking spanish chicken tonight and wanted to add some rice to it, i've seen some recipes saying add uncooked rice and others saying the rice must be cooked - has anyone done either? I don't want to have to get up and add things as I'll be leaving it on over night.
Also, a bit worried the rice will stick or there won't be enough fluid so other's experiences would be appreciated :-)[/QUOTE]

Hi there! You really don't want to add rice overnight. It just isn't one of those overnight-friendly things unfortunately. Generally, rice takes about 3 hours on High but even on Low over night it'll go very mushy and porridgy. I've tried it both ways. In future, a good solution would be to get a rice cooker (they're really cheap - about a tenner), make your chicken nice and sloppy and pop the rice on overnight in the rice cooker. It'll hold at the right temperature for up to 12 hours. Then mix it all in in the morning. Otherwise, adding the rice about 45 mins before the end on High is the best bet.

Sorry not to give you a great solution!
  • Wow, this is the first time I've found this thread. I love my slow-cooker but found all the cook books for them were either very American or were for really dull food so I started researching and creating new recipes. I've put all my recipes so far on a blog called "SlowcookedinBlighty" and I'm adding a couple a week. I'm not a big stew fan so I've been focussing on things that don't seem obvious for the slow-cooker like macaroni cheese, rice-pudding, veggie dishes etc. Let me know if you find it helpful!:) I can't add the link for some reason but it comes up on Google at about 3rd place if you search for the blog name

I have put my spanish meatball soup in mine today and it will be ready by about 6pm. A couple of bowls before we go out tonight as we already had dinner earlier :)

I have not had the best of luck with the SC I have to say. I am learning all the time and hope one day I will have it totally cracked!

    Hi there
it is wuite quick to finish but it will switch itself over to warm as soon as the timer is up so all you have to do is reduce timings. I am finding the pot awesome. being able to bworn off stuff on the hob then put the same pot strait in to the crock is great. the sauce i have made for tonight is a bit wishy so i will just pop it in the oven whilst the pasta is cooking job done !
I am lucky to have a couple of days off so i can use it whilst at home to get to know it. It cooked a casserole in 4 hours yesterday but that was with 2 hours on high. so i will knoe not to bother with high for next time.
The only thing i may do for when i am out all day is hook it up through a timer plug just to be on the safe side.
It is a really good looking pot so easy to leave on the side also.
