No bank account and a DVLA cheque?

Hi All
I have received a partial refund on road tax BUT I have no bank account in my name!
It is a HM Paymaster General cheque which says on the front "Please sign overleaf if not paying into your own bank account" and then on the back "received the sum stated overleaf Signature of payee date"
BUT my partners bank won't accept it as it also says Not Negotiable across the front!
Am I missing something? Post office cash it maybe? Any ideas how to sort this out?
Thanks

Open a basic bank account and pay it in.
Open a savings account and pay it in.
Take it to a cheque cashing service who will cash it for a fee.0 -
I'm surprised that you don't have some form of bank account. I would suggest open one. Cheque cashing service isn't that great, due to a fee applied to it.
Also, how do you get paid when in employment? Most employers pay salary into a bank account.

Probably best to open a basic bank account ... even if you have limited/no credit history, you'll still be able to get one. It will no doubt come in useful in the future as well.
See these links:

http://www.personal.barclays.co.uk/BRC1/jsp/brccontrol?site=pfs&task=homefreegroup&value=12866
Here are two ... both give you online banking, debit card (note: when Barclays say 'Connect card' they mean debit card), the ability to have salary paid into the account and direct debits/standing orders out of the account.0 -
Well in answer to not having a bank account, I don't need one.
I don't work as stay at home dad, I don't claim benefits as partner earns too much.
My past credit history is not good and I do not want it affecting my partners very good history, so therefore not going to go as joint holder on her accounts either.
We just share hers basically.
The basic bank accounts worry me that they credit check and that the past may well catch up with me, being totally honest there!!!!
Thanks anyway.0 -

The Halifax Easycash account doesn't credit check.
Savings accounts don't credit check.Well in answer to not having a bank account, I don't need one.
Looks like you do!0 -
A credit check on a basic account doesn't involve credit scoring or anything like that, and it won't affect your partner at all.
If it's over 6 years, the bad history will be written off.0 -

Well, it would be useful to have one for this cheque, so it looks like you do need one.gilldanlily wrote: »My past credit history is not good and I do not want it affecting my partners very good history, so therefore not going to go as joint holder on her accounts either.
An account that is only in your name would not impact upon your partners' credit history.
Or, a savings account (whether joint or single) would not impact upon her credit history, as no savings account is credit checked.gilldanlily wrote: »The basic bank accounts worry me that they credit check and that the past may well catch up with me, being totally honest there!!!!
No, the basic bank accounts do not credit check. That is the whole point of them - they are available to everyone.
The only times when you might not get a basic bank account is if you are an undischarged bankrupt or have a record of fraud.0 -
