Boyfriend taking steroids - im freaking out!

Hi Lou,
The other risk you run, if he does decide to inject, is if he shares needles he could very well contract something and pass it to you.
His phobia of needles does tend to negate that risk at the moment but if he stops getting "results" do you know for sure he wouldn't do this?
I'm not morally judging his decision, i can even understand it to some degree, but he does need to consider what he is doing and how it could also impact you.0 -
Hi alleycat
I can be pretty sure that he wouldnt inject, as he faints even at the sight of a needle - he really is severly phobic, but i understand where you are coming from. Im guessing if he stopped getting results then he would up the amount of tablets. But if he did begin to inject, then i would be very very annoyed, as, as you say then there are health risks to me too.0 -
I know it's different but i have come across numerous heroin users who inject and have a 'needle phobia.' Odd i know.0

i was going to say that "since the needle would go in his backside" would he even see it if someone did it for him?
That was my concern with the sharing aspect of it.0 -

Exactly, i would take the phobia with a pinch of salt to be honest, that won't stop someone from injecting, or a 'friend' doing it for them0 -
The typical side effects of steroids are normally; back acne, testicles shrinking (not the penis as has been suggested), growth of man boobs, high blood pressure, and increased aggresion.
There are many many more though, some more longer term than short.
As for the person who asked about creatine. Creatine is naturally occuring in the body. The only know side effect (and it's not really a side effect for those who take it) is an increase of body weight. From what I know/have read there isn't any other side effects.0 -
Alleycat - thank you for your honest post, can understand men getting tempted to take them, as you say party due to pressure to look a certain way, but, cant believe the possible damage to your body is worth the risk.
I don't mean to sound preachy as you've recognised it yourself, but you aren't gonna win any arguments with him if you ask him to stop and you're still smoking.
Does he take any other supplements? Protein powders, creatine, ZMA?0 -
Ok...being thin for most of his life has meant the guy's got addicted to the effects of the steroids ie. he's starting to bulk and is probably fantasising about what he will look like a few months down the road when he's really ripped and looks like all the other hunkies down the gym.
My feeling is you are not going to get him to stop by telling him about the bad things that could happen anymore than if he sat there and told you what a heavy smoker dying of lung cancer looked like.
Right now you both have your addictions and you're both getting a satisfying, positive payback off them. And both of you are probably thinking that you're still way young and not been doing your addictions for long enough or hard enough to cause health problems.
He will probably stop when he actually has a negative experience with them. Or the alternative is for you to let him know at what point in the downhill slide you will probably call it a day with him and request he regulate his habit and watches his behaviour so it never comes to that.
I know that sounds very harsh, but you just can't force anyone to do anything. You have to tell them your fears, draw your line in the sand and stick to it.
You might find the thrill wears off after a while and he stops of his own accord."carpe that diem"0 -
thank you for your post, in fairness he doesnt bully me, and its definately his own money hes spending not mine (not that, that matters to much in the great scheme of things) but yes he has lied and the infertile/violence sometimes attributed to steroids does alarm me.
really?he promised me he'd stop
...
he has lied to me about taking them
...
he said i couldnt tell him to stop as i smoke and he doesnt like me doing that

We're getting to the stage of talking about starting a family and ive read that steroids lead to infertility
Call it bullying or blackmail or what you will. His steroid use puts your physical, emotional and financial health at risk. You're physically at risk because steroid use can result in violence (one of my best friends was murdered by a guy who suffered severe personality changes as a result of steroid use - don't kid yourself, it happens). If you start a family then your kids are also going to be at risk. And you're prepared to give up smoking to start a family but has he said he's prepared to give them up, no, he's said you can't ask him to - that makes him a bully. He's making you responsible for his behaviour. And actually, if you're in a partnership then it is your joint money he's spending, just as it's your joint money you're spending on fags - because it's all money that should really be used to benefit you as a family unit. Oh, yes, and then there's the risk that he starts injecting and sharing with others - HIV, Hepatitis etcEat food. Not too much. Mostly plants - Michael Pollan
