Boyfriend taking steroids - im freaking out!

Found out yesterday that my BF is taking anabolic steroids - basicially to "help" him at the gym. This is the 2nd time i have found out he is taking them (1st time was in the summer, when he promised me he'd stop.)

Hes NOT injecting (and can be pretty sure he wont, as faints at sight of needles!) but taking them in tablet form.

Apart from being annoyed he has lied to me about taking them, i am also very concerned about the effect on his health. Have googled it, but most sites i have found seem to refer to the injectable kind, and im not sure if this is the same.

When i confronted him, he said i couldnt tell him to stop as i smoke and he doesnt like me doing that. (fair point in alot of ways.)

We're getting to the stage of talking about starting a family and ive read that steroids lead to infertility, so im also worried about this. (obviously for this id 100% give up smoking 1st.)

Dont really know what im looking for, any one been in a similar position, want to offer any advise etc??

Steroids are nasty things to be messing about with. If he is taking them for any length of time they can change his mood patterns and he may become increasingly angry or even violent. Have you tried shock tactics alot of steroids will actually effect his man hood and cause it to shrivel up until he stops. My ex did a course of them once much to my horror he did eventually see reason and stopped and he couldnt believe how they had affected him so badly. He coudlnt see what was happeneing until he stopped taking them.

My ex used to do them orally - only stopped when he started losing blood in his urine. His mate got a right state in them. All because they wanted to be "bigger". It's like any drug - if those around you are all doing them, it's very hard not to.

Pregnancy is stressful and a lot of women find it hard not to smoke even when pregnant, so if your overall goal is to give up smoking, why not do it sooner rather than later - it might help your OH to see you give up something.

  • This is second time he has betrayed your trust. Now he is resorting to your smoking to justify it.

I personally think If you overlook this you will be inviting more problems. If he has lied to you about this, he will have no problem with letting you down in the future.

Trust is the most important thing in a relationship.

  • Sorry to hijack this thread but does anyone know if creatine is bad? My husband is taking it and I am convinced it is messing with his mind - he thinks I am imagining it!

hi my DH used to take steriods for years (before i met him and about 6 months into out relationship)) and regarding the fertility issues we have had a healthy child with no problems concieving.

But i do agree with flossyblog about trust being the most important thing in a relationship and think you need to sit down and serously discuss it and tell him how upset you are and that your are not happy with him taking steriods !! and maybe print of some info from the internet and show him the affects that steriods have on him !

Thank you all for the replies, am actually trying to cut down on the smoking at the moment, as i actually gave up for over 3 years and then stupidly started again at a very stressful peirod in my life last year (no excuse i know.)

He was taking them in summer (early summer about May) and said he'd stop, but after i found them yesterday can only presume he has been taking them since at least then, have no idea how long he was taking them before i found out the 1st time tho.

Have tried all the shock tactics 1st time around, and he seems to think that as hes not injecting he will be ok???

My biggest concern is his health, but am also concerned about the mental aspects, as you hear all these things about "roid rage" and things.

As flossyblog points out, there is also the fact that he lied about it, to the extent of telling me he had given up and then continuing to take them in secret. Whilst i can understand him doing this a little, as i was SO annoyed the 1st time, if he can lie that easierly and for that long too me, its a little worrying.

My OH has taken Creatine for years and I haven't noticed any side effects. He is the sane one in our relationship.

I have to agree with shock tactics, loulou. There must be plenty of pictures on the net that can do that. Can you also offer him an incentive if he stops using them, like a new piece of exercise equipment, or membership to a better gym? Not to mention a baby.
