After cancelling Tiscali - please help!

Hi everyonne,

I cancelled tiscali internet in december and on december 15th they cut off all service, email, etc, and our sky package kicked in fine, all hunky dory. Today I checked my bank statement and saw that a tiscali payment was taken this week for £14.97ish (the regular amount), and my billing date was always the 14th so in my brain that means I only had 1 day of tiscali use in december in the new billing month - if you get me?!

My question is do they really charge the full month's use despite them cutting off all service on 15th and having several letters to confirm this? I've cancelled my DD just in case but wanted to know if there was any scope for asking for a refund? Have sent 2 emails over the last week asking about this but had no reply, and today I saw they'd taken the money.

Any help mucho appreciated!

Jem

  • They never reply unless you owe them money!!
They sent me a bill coz I cancelled DD just incase and they tried to get money out and sent it to debt collection agency!
I called them and told them I was in dispute with tiscali and would be counter suing them for useless service and poor customer service which it was.
Never heard another thing from them but give it a few months and they will probably be back!!!
Depends which bank you are with but Abbey will repay you if someone takes money out which is unauthorised or you have a dispute with them as Virgin Media did the same, took payments when service had ceased so try your bank if you get no joy with tiscali.
    Good Luck
  • You pay in advance, but should be due a refund. I am waiting for mine... If it doesn't arrive, I will try the DD guarantee and if that doesn't work small claims. It might only be a small amount, but I am willing to annoy them until tey pay.

Quick hint, use their email customer service site rather than ringing, you don't need an active tiscali account as you will have your billing reference (starts UI something on my bill)

Phone them and make sure your account is fully closed since you have now migrated to Sky.

Obtaining your MAC and using it does not mean that your account is fully cancelled and closed.

You should always phone them up after to make sure it is closed after migrating away.

Call your bank and ask for a refund under the Direct Debit Guarantee scheme.

Did you start a new contract? Or, has your current contract not expired yet?
  • I have never started a new contract, I probally started tiscali about four years ago, and never have signed anything since etc ?? what do you think??

A contract has nothing to do with signing anything. You acccept the T&C's verbally and by using the service and paying for it.
Have you changed your package, or had a discount applied in the last 12/18 months? If so that will inevitably have put you on a new 12 or 18m contract.
Ask them for a breakdown on the £80 charge, i.e. £x per month for y months.
Also bear in mind that even if you're out of contract, if you simply cease your broadband (rather than transfering your service to another ISP by using a MAC) then OpenReach will levy a £25 cease charge on your ISP, which they will pass on to you. This would be in addition to any early termination charge.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
