I had a faulty ebay item which I sent recorded back to the seller. He never ever received the item and the tracking on Royal Mail said "still being processed through our system" for about a month after being sent back.
I submitted a claim for £15.00 being the cost of the item and the only thing I got back was a book of first class stamps. Not very impressed.
This has happened to me in the past - a recorded delivery item was delivered ... but the package was empty despite very careful use of brown postage tape. A knife had been used to steal the contents. I refunded buyer and made a claim with RM who sent me a book of first class stamps as compensation. I too was not impressed (ok the item was only worth a fiver but not the point). Luckily the buyer still had the envelope, posted it back to me and I in turn sent RM a nasty letter with the envelope as evidence and a few weeks later a chq for £5!
I have also just sent a recorded delivery letter (well 18 Dec) ...... prior to making a small claims court app against an scammer and the tracking is telling me that it "still being processed through our system". When I spoke to consumer advise they told me to sent it Special Delivery (he was an ex-postie) and said SD is always treated as a priority. Cost me £4.95 to post a bit paper but I've had confirmation of it's delivery.
Swings and roundabouts - you will always get a buyer who is after something for nothing and if they can get away with it, they will!0 -
Don't mistake business sellers though as anything other than cut throat. You have the luxury of selling a fairly unique item, my business sales are in direct competition to others so I win hands down by undercutting them. It makes no business sense at all for me to waste money paying for a RM service that doesn't work.
On my private sales I have even less incentive to use recorded, I just want to make as much money as I can and therefore can't afford to use recorded.
Fairly unique items that have peak time to sell as well (I am not daft, I know when the best times to sell are)
Also the fact when I sell they are useually in very good condition that is at least £5-10 cheaper than most other sellers (as I am not looking for profit) they sell quicker, aside from the idiots who ask if I am willing to accept another set of darts as payment which i am not.
The only reason I use recorded is simply to stop item not received claims, so far I have had 1 item not get to the place it was intended, everything else has with online proof as well, so maybe I am lucky with regards to the sucess rate of recorded delivery.0 -
I think some areas are better with recorded than others. When you check online do all your show as delivered? The problem is though that the recorded I send for work rarely if ever show as delivered, they never get past the 'still being processed through our system' message even when the stuff has bene received safe and sound. If they were ebay items I would still lose a paypal chargeback.
I think the problem has always been that many newer sellers believe that merely sending something recorded is enough, they don't realise it must show as delivered as well. I also think there is a misunderstanding that recorded is a somehow better service when it is just standard mail, carried with standard mail and with the same compensation limits.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. Excluding the one that never arrived yes all my items show as delivered with proof online as well. The one that never arrived took a couple of weeks to claim but got reimbursed my Royal Mail no problems with that either0 -

I always send items recorded. I used to send items standard but a couple went missing altho they did eventually turn up it was just the christmas post that delayed them. However one of the buyers was very insistent and rude to me whilst waiting and I decided I would not risk that again and always send recorded. I sometimes do it first class sometimes second but always add on the extra for recorded and advertise as recorded. No buyer has ever had a problem with this and I have sold lots of items. the way I see it its piece of mind for buyer and seller alike. Also when items went missing I read up on paypal my seller rights and read that unless something is sent by a trackable service it always goes in buyers favour so this was another factor in my decision.
I had a chargeback for a £17 bag I had sent just before christmas and was very worried about this as I have heard paypal is rubbish at going in a sellers favour. I had never had a chargeback before so was unsure on how they usually turn out. I supplied the necessary info to paypal. I had sent the item recorded however it was saying that the item was still being processed, I also copied in the message that I had sent to the buyer telkling them to item had been posted (they did the chargeback the day after this message). I did get a reply saying that the tracking number wasnt sufficient as it did not show the address or something so I replied saying I could scan the proof of posting which had the house number and post code on, which they said I could fax but I never did.
To my utter surprise I got a email saying the case had gone in my favour and I had my money back! I was surprised that paypal actually went in my favour!0 -

I'm surprised as well as paypal have gone against their own terms and conditions and frankly I would be appalled if that happened to me either as a buyer or seller. By your own admission the item is still only in the system and buyer does not have it, yet they lose their money? criminal.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. Hopefully the buyer will appeal the decision and point out to paypal there own rulesGiggles_Fairy wrote: »I had a chargeback for a £17 bag I had sent just before christmas and was very worried about this as I have heard paypal is rubbish at going in a sellers favour. As the seller I had to prove I had posted the item and contacted the buyer to tell them of this, which I did. The buyer did not raise a claim for not recieved they did a chargeback, had they done a claim they probably would have had a case and it would have been up to me to claim the money back from the royal mail.
I also felt it was a very suspicious situation because
A) It was a chargeback not a paypal claim
The buyer did not contact me once to ask where the item was/say they hadnt recieved it/or even to say hello!
C) The chargeback was instigated the day after I messaged to confirm the item had been sent.
Actually thinking about it its only up to paypal to give the credit card company the evidence and the credit card company make the decision, or thats what they say in the email anyway, so it was the credit card company who deemed my evidence sufficient.
Although maybe the buyer cancelled the chargeback, if this can be done?!
No feedback has been left and they have had no recent activity so very suspicious if you ask me!0 -
Apologies then, if this was a claim for fraudulent use of a card then paypal were correct, but you still would not have needed recorded to win, any proof of postage would do.
A chargeback for item not received though would not be posisble with mere proof of posting, therefore recorded is no better in either of these situations.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. I was only told it was a chargeback. From what I read a buyer can do a chargeback for any reason? They just tell their card company to cancel the payment.
In the email from paypal it said it had to be a trackable service for it to be used as evidence. Which is understandable as a proof of postage is merely a piece of paper with a handwritten address on it, you could put any address on there. At least thats what I get at my post office, just a kind of reciept and I write the address on. Whereas for recorded its printed on the actual reciept.
Ive actually asked for recordeed off a buyer before now when it wasnt offered, they had a few negatives but did have alot of feedback and whats 75p for piece of mind.0
