Sherry

Options
I want to get some sherry (for a recipe, not to drink :p ) and no way do I want to use what they call "cooking sherry" as it has too much salt added :eek: but I haven't a clue which one to get :confused:

I need something that's dry but just looking at Tesco's list they don't state which ones are dry and most of them are "cream" sherries, which I'm assuming are sweeter?

  • If you look here it looks like they tell you whether each one is dry, medium or sweet. Hope this helps.

    Well, it appears Tesco only sell one dry one which comes in a 1 litre bottle :eek:

    I'm not sure I really need that much, and I'm certainly not going to take up drinking sherry :eek: ... so how long does sherry keep if I'm just using it for cooking purposes, bearing in mind with Xmas just around the corner I could probably find a few uses for it :D

    Ive had a bottle of Pale Sherry (dry) in my cupboard for a year or so now and it just comes out for cooking (and the odd very stressful moment!!) Dont think it will go off for a long time CQ

    What ya cooking BTW?

  • Sherry doesn't go off - at least not for ages. However, as long as it's sweet (ie Harveys Bristol Cream type) it doesn't last that long here (I find it helps the cooking of a large meal esp. when the IL's are visiting. However, I do drink it by the large wine glassfull :D *hic*)

    I'm sure you could find a use for it over Xmas....

    he he he ;) ... I'm in my Chinese experimental cooking mode at the moment and as I forgot to order any Saki last week I thought I'd give the sherry a try instead, as they're very similar, but that's why it needs to be dry rather than sweet ;)

    Sounds as though I may as well get the litre bottle then as it's only £4 something or other anyway, and not exactly gonna break the bank!

    I know but you are my hero recipe wise so was just seeing if there was a new one to try!!!
    I have a great recipe for Paprika Chicken where you boil the chicken pieces in sherry and water first and its gorgeous so that could get rid of some sherry if you need to.

    I agree with TM (what a wise woman she is!) You cannot cook a Sunday Roast unless marinated in sherry (the cook that is not the roast). I've broke with tradition today tho and downed 2ltrs of cheap German white. hic (well it was on special and I paid with a divvy voucher)
