Either way they're all ok. I prefer to buy with cash on collection. I've often asked can I pick up locally even if they don't offer collection, and so far only one seller has refused, (but it was high postage, so probably trying to make money on it.)
I prefer it as I can see the goods, they can see the money, shake hands, on my way.
    But I'm middle aged though.

But if you were a dishonest buyer and paid through paypal you could easily claim an Item not received and win because the seller can't prove you received it. Yeah the seller gets the FVF back but looses out on the value of the product they were selling.

Can't you make them sign an 'item collected' slip when they turn up?
Do not allow the risk of failure to stop you trying!

How does that help when paypal require a tracked delivery confirmation online to the address given on the paypal transaction:

For those unclear about how the paypal on collection scam works it is covered here:

However, I still think people need to consider that a buyer who backs out of a deal as paypal is refused leaves the seller with hefty FVFs that will still need to be paid, so this isn't as simple as just refusing to sell and getting a neg.

If your not comfortable being home alone for a collection either arrange a time for collection when you can have someone with you or don't sell an item that needs collected. Selling an item for colelction on ebay is no different to advertising an item in your local paper you still don't know who is going to turn up.

You can do that, you can take a photo of the person holding the item and driving away with it, you can take a photocopy of their passport, driving licence and a utility bill, but paypal wont accept it. As paypal wont accept it ebay won't either.

I have sold many items and offered collection or post and had many collected with no problems at all. Take a few sensible precautions but don't take the scare stories to seriously it is the exception and I would guess there are far more problems as a % on posted items. 99.9% of Ebayers are honest and trustworthy. The only time i would be suspicious was if they had bad or no feedback.

  • I've sold a few heavy items, listed them with an appropriate courier/Parcelforce price for delivery and also offered local pick up or local delivery with cash as payment.

.In my listing I stated that if PayPal was the bidders preferred method of payment, that was fine but the courier/postal charges were incurred.

One bidder travelled over 200 miles to collect, others travelled less and some chose the delivery option.

    Everyone was happy.

Sometimes I think it's particular items which attract the scammers.

A buyer would not know you live alone and there's no reason to let them in if you can get the item to the front door. I really think you are at no greater risk than with anyone else knocking on your front door.

You probably have more chance of getting mugged or run over on the way to the post office.

Don't worry about it - you'll probably realise how easy it was afterwards.

You could always ask them to keep the noise down as your partner is in bed having just been released from prison for GBH and is training nights for the world kick boxing championships.
