Hi
Get cheeky.
When you are still in the shop, gently scrape the bark low down on the plant with your thumb. if you see green, consider buying it, if it is brown leave it.
Alternatively break a root and see if that is live.
You need live roots and a live stem, even if only low down. I see a lot of dead twigs for sale in the cheap shops and sometimes even in the lower cost supermarkets. If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing0 -

Garden !!!!!!, I call it.
As a rule it takes plants that do well two years to produce much of a crop.If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing0 -

We have had various fruit bushes from Aldi/Lidl and Morrisons, they were something like 3 varietys for £2.99 from adli/lidl and £1.29ish from Morrisons.
All grew well last year, but not a huge crop, I am expecting better this year now they are established.

The is a chain of shops that are called `the 99p store`.Freedom is the freedom to say that 2+2 = 4 (George Orwell, 1984).

Morrisons aren't that cheap but everything i've bought there has grown well.Liverpool is one of the wonders of Britain,
What it may grow to in time, I know not what.
