A New Type of Property Show on TV - "Britain's Empty Homes"

  • It's just the meaningless and clearly fallacious soundbite of there being a million empty homes that annoys me.

The 'million empty homes' soundbite is becoming common currency. You should expect to hear it repeated over and over again this year.

It doesn't matter if it's true or false. What matters is whether it's believed. It's the new type of property show promoting this belief which should trouble you - shortly we'll see a 'me too' version on C4.

Soon, the buyer's market mentality will increasingly hold sway as buyers repeat the mantra:
"Why should I pay your deluded and inflated asking price when there are a million empty homes?"

    :D

The person doesn't finish the job, and the bank is left with a wreck, with a mortgage on it.

I actually don't have an issue with this, if we could get some of these properties back into circulation it can only help, the shortage is that great.

It's just the meaningless and clearly fallacious soundbite of there being a million empty homes that annoys me.

As a builder, will do and complete the work myself no problem but again i see your point. As for ways to get on the ladder and move up it (all advice gratefully recieved)

Would it be a bad idea to get somewhere really affordable for me(in poor condition) live there for a year or so while doing it up, or just do it up as i live at home and rent out. So im asking first mortgage being a btl, good idea or bad?

Maybe live in it for a year, move back home and rent it out to cut costs and save a large chunk for own mortgage.
Work in progress...Update coming July 2012.

I think the post is stretching it a bit, but you can't argue that sentiment has a massive power in the market. During the summer when the indices were reporting price rises all I was seeing is selling price and asking prices falling. However 6 months on and with all the positive ramping by the media people are starting to believe it and it's almost becoming self fulfilling now.

A few months of negative data and sound bites coupled with the phrase "double dip" being reported in the media and the market could swing back the other way just as quickly.

    Heh. VG.

The point that I was making (for moneysavers :money:) is that, when making offers on a property, the fact that there's a mainstream media belief in 'a million empty homes' serves the buyer's interest much more than it serves the sellers.

I thought that was what MSE was all about. No?
    ;)

Yes, the appearance of this show might just herald some sort of tipping point in sentiment. What word should we use for the opposite of 'ramping'?

If I was the seller and received such a comment I would point out that 'not only is there a shortage of sellers and a shortage of new building, there is a million properties off the market ad infinitum as well'
