Same for us, slightly cheaper having it on timed but not comfortable living. Cost isn't an issue so we just have it on 24/7.

We just got out winter bill. Thats Nov - Jan 18th. £197

To put it in prospective, its a 4 bed detached, new(ish) build. Heating on 24/7. Between 18 and 20 and sometimes turned down to 16 during the night.

Extremely pleased with that winter bill.

Ummm, so you've found keeping heat on at a low level comparible in price to setting it on a silly high setting that burns at twice the lower rate for half the day? not sure what that's supposed to 'prove'

The MSE approach would be to set it at a sensible low level and on a timer to minimise your bills.

When people talk about cost they only seem to talk about monetary cost and the cost to them. What about the environmental cost we all have to pay?

Not getting at you in particular, just sharing a thought.

My house is the same freezing with the heating off. 3 bedroom with downstairs bathroom. Weve got yhe heating on allday almost, except at night. And I couldnt give a monkeys about my carbon fingerprint, when the likes of Madonna do 60000 air miles a year. And to be honest I dont believe in it all. Ignorant maybe, but my house is warm.
    Loving this site.

Well my enviroment's going to be warm.
I'm still not convinced by all this carbon footprint rubbish and certainly not going to freeze in winter for anybody.:)

Course, we are lucky in having an old house where chimneys were an essential part of the build. We just bung a few logs and coal on rather than putting up the heating. Lovely to sit there in the evening round the fire.

I have never had the heating on during the night - seems a terrible waste of money and energy if you are a normal fit person. - it would make me feel like I was suffocating. Always have a window open even if its just a small one, to have air flow in the house. Perhaps thats why we rarely get colds and stuff? The house soon warms up in the morning. You can set your heating for an hour before getting up time?
  • Originally my post was in reply to people asking about whether it was cheaper to leave heating on all the time or timed.

I normally have my heating on timed but the 2 weeks over Christmas and new year because of the cold outside I had it on 24 hours and I used more gas than when timed.

This I said, was as I expected, if the heating is on it uses gas, if it is off it uses no gas.

I also uprated my insulation in the summer and this made a noticable difference to my usage from last year.

And I also discovered that leaving my heating on 24/7 for 2 weeks did not use as much extra gas as I would have thought.

My re-evaluated conclusion, the more insulation the better, if you can afford it keep your heating on to keep comfortable and to hell with the expense.

Just because some people can live in a temp of 16 deg C doesn't mean you have to. It is what you are comfortable in.

I started another thread on this subject; people claim to be comfortable in temperatures as low as 9C!!!!!!

I suspect that many have inaccurate thermometers, or think that a wall thermostat set to, say, 16C in a hall means that a living room is also at 16C.

All publications I have read state that 21C is the recommended living room temperature, and that is certainly the minimum for myself when siiting down watching TV etc. 16C is plain cold.
  • 9c is a luxury I've not seen for a while. Typical indoor temp day and night here the past month 5-7c.

    You get used to it.

Quite true - my thermostat in the hallway /stairs is set to 15°C but the living room warms up to about 19-20°C due to a closed door!
