Broadband provider advice needed.

Hoping someone out there can help me.

I'm looking for a reasonably priced broadband for my retired parents who are currently still on dial up. They don't use the internet much at the moment, because they are concerned about the cost mounting up each time they dial in. Their PAYG dial up was with Tiscali.

Their area is not covered by cable as yet and mobile broadband is out as they live in an area which has poor signal.

Their phone line is with SWALEC, so although nothing is paid to BT can they use a provider that states a BT line is required?

Thanks for any help you can give me.

  • Presumably, even though they pay the bill to SWALEC it is still a BT line.
    Gus.
  • I presumed thats the case, I know SWALEC broadband works out quite pricey, so I'm trying to avoid that for them. They only need it for general surfing, email and Skype.

Broadband is exchange based, so no advice can be given without knowing what exchange they are on. Have a look on https://www.samknows.com, then exchange search, LLU operators. Generally the LLU providers will be the cheapest. 02 can be recommended if available on LLU.
If unsure, post the exchange name and someone can advise you.
If no LLU operators are available, you might look at Plusnet Value, which is £5.99 on a Market 3 exchange, otherwise £11.99.

I have just checked, its listing ADSL as the only one available. Ofcom classification is Market 1. At least I now have an idea where to start!

So are you saying no LLU providers at all? probably a smal rural exchange.
If so I would look at Plusnet Value.
If you switch phone calls as well then the price is better overall.

  • On the Broadband availabilty overview only ADSL is ticked. Its in North Wales, so always a bit behind the rest of the country!
I will have a look have Plusnet Value.
    Thanks macman

You need to look on exchange search, then 'LLU Operator Presence'. Anyone listed against that?
Plenty of LLU in N. Wales, but it's exchange specific.

Nobody is listed against the 'LLU Operator Presence'

OK, then you have to use a BT Wholesale provider, of which Plusnet is one. Cost will be £5.99 for 1st 3 months, then £11.99.
Remember to sign up through Quidco to get cashback (currently £28).

  • What's gone on here ?
I know I made two helpful posts on this thread, including a link to a website offering comparisons on broadband deals (other sites are available !) but they appear to have disappeared ?
    That's a bit rude !
    Gus.
