  • BBC World Service is not funded by the licence fee.

I can't really comment on other BBC local radio stations, but if anyone tried to get rid of BBC Radio Merseyside they would have a big fight on their hands, notwithstanding the fact that Radio City, Real Radio and Smooth Radio all operate in the area.

The BBC has far exceeded its original remit and become involved in commercial activities. It needs its wings clipping.

Simply not true. The 'remit' referred to is the BBC Charter, laid down by Act of Parliament and not decided by the BBC itself. I would concede that charters do evolve, but is this not normal? Wht was right for the 1920s is not necessarily right for the 2010s.

There are parts of the BBC which are commercial ventures, but these do not receive a penny of licence payers' or taxpayers' money.

'Wings clipping': yet another Daily Mail cliche.

  • I'll have to admit to reading the Daily Mail, but this is one thing I don't agree on.. I think the BBC is a fantastic broadcaster, which produces, mainly, excellent programs. Personally, I'm a fan of Top Gear and The Apprentice (along with some other programs) and I think the licence fee represents great value for money.

The BBC is a worldwide symbol of Britishness and generally held in high regard across the world - do we really want to tear down that reputation by destroying it? Let's keep Britain great by keeping the BBC!

Unfortunately for you the tories believe it to be true and have stated that they will reform it if they win an election.

The BBC should be made to live in the real world. For instance, why should they be requesting increases in the licence fee while others are having to cut their clothe accordingly. Must be so that they can continue paying mega salaries and bonuses.

Interesting that Ross's salary after leaving the BBC is expected to drop to 1/3.

The BBC need to be bought into the real world. I do not read the Daily Mail.

Nobody said the BBC was perfect, it is however the best broadcaster in the world and worth every penny of my licence fee.

We seem to be heading towards an American form of TV, heaven help us.

Again, another cliche, this time repeated, yet not a scrap of evidence provided, nor a rebuttal of other posts where actual facts are presented.

Maybe they were Daily Express cliches!!

You still haven't answered the question why everyone who doesn't watch the BBC yet assesses live TV should have to pay a license fee if. If you love the BBC then fair enough - pay them a subscription. Personally I find their bloated structure and obscene spending to be offensive.

The license fee is basically a compulsory tax which is inequitable. I much prefer the Tory proposal to abolish it and fund the BBC out of general taxation.

By the way - you should cut out the clitches as it is poor form. I could call you a Guardian reader, but I wont.

  • As far as I'm aware commercial stations get some of the licence fee as well, so that would be why you'd still have to pay for it. They don't get that much, but it all adds up. (At least that's what I was told at a time anyway!)
