Crib or moses basket?

For all the parents out there, would you recommend buying a crib or a moses basket?
Not going to get a cot just yet as it won't fit in our bedroom, and wondering how long a moses basket will last. I think I'll buy whatever we get second hand (with a new mattress) but was leaning towards a crib as thought we might get a bit more use out of it. Unfortunately we don't have anyone who will lend us a moses basket.

Crib will last a lot longer. A lot of babies start hitting their arms off the sides of a mosey and wake themeselves up, don't want that!
John Lewis has a nice range of tradional cribs on display so you could get an idea of size etc and take it from there.
Also Ikea cots are a bit on the small size, have you taken any measurements?0 -
I would definitely say crib as they grow out of Moses baskets soooo quickly!
We bought a moses basket for our first and he wasn't a particularly big baby, but grew out of it very quickly. Luckily for us one of my friends gave us a crib and it lasted until he was about 6 months when he went in his proper cot. HTH0 -
dd2 was in her moses basket until she was 4 months and shes on the large side. She didnt hit her arms off the side because she was swaddled. I liked the moses basket because I could move it in to the living room for her day time sleeps.
But I think I would prefer a crib if I was planning anymore because they are lovely.0 -
We got a contraption that has a couple of settings where you can extend the sides from "crib" and make it into a cot with a bigger mattress.Organised Birthdays and Christmas: Spend So Far: £193.75; Saved from RRP £963.76

I think your supposed to stop using a moses basket when baby starts sitting up, my DS didnt last that long in his but it was a god send to keep in the front room so he was getting as good a sleep downstairs during the day as he would in his bed upstairs if you know what i mean,
have you looked on freecycle? people are always giving thier baby stuff away and if your going to get a new mattress anyway you might find just what your looking for! maybe a crib upstairs and a moses downstairs!0 -
Thanks George, I have seen people giving away moses baskets on freecycle, but thought I might just use the pram (which will be there anyway) rather than having more stuff. Realise I might have to get a separate mattress though. Will have a think about that one..

We got a cot/bed from Ikea for when baby is in his own room
And then couldnt decide whether to get a travel cot for our room or a moses basket
We decided on a travel cot as they will last longer, and it can be used for longer (as a playpen if I have to be in kitchen or something) there was a reduced Hauck one in toys r us for £30 so we got that (but are going to buy a mattress from mothercare for £20 cos I am not happy that its thick enough for permanant sleeping)
But then MIL has just been on the phne saying she has got us a moses basket from Bainbridges cos they are reducded to £20 (or a certain one is lol)
So now its going to be moses basket in bedroom, travel cot downstrairs (and when staying at grandparents) then when he is too big for moses basket we will put the travel cotin the bedroom, then when he is 6 months he will be going to his own cotbed in his nurseryDebt £30,823.48/£44,856.56 ~ 06/02/21 - 31.28% Paid OffMortgage (01/04/09 - 01/07/39)

I used the pram with my DD as i had plenty of room for it, but we have moved since then and we dont have the room to have the pram up all the time here so DS had a moses basket on a stand tucked between the sofa and a chair, it took up very little space and occasionally people would miss it and ask where the baby was!!0
