I need a dial-up connection for about a week at max

Can't put the bill on the home phone (light user scheme)

Using a call provider for dialup will work out expensive.
Have you considered a USB PAYG dongle from vodafone
  • Hi,

I only need at most a week

    Couple of hours a day

Would the dongle work out cheaper?

    Thanks

Are you still on the LUS or have you been moved to the new BT Basic scheme.

You can use broadband on BT Basic.

http://emergencyinternet.com/ offer access via a 0845 number. Bt will charge you their 0845 standard rate to access it ,which i believe is now 2p a minute peak and half a p offpeak plus connection. Worth checking rates with BT.

You can compare the cost of PAYG dongles here: http://www.broadbandchoices.co.uk/pay-as-you-go-dongles.html

A dongle is about £20 and a months usage/topup starts at around £10. Plus you will still have the dongle if you ever need it again.

I bought a vodafone payg dongle for this type of access - best point is that their topup did NOT expire at end of week/month and so now what I did not use is a useful backup for powercuts when BB dont work but my laptop does on battery. Used it in the past weeks snow when our power was cut.

Unfortunately any bought now will expire unless you can get one of the older ones (they apparently changed this sometime in December - was discussed here - http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=2200815 )
My vote would still go to a PAYG dongle though but make sure you get one that works where you need it to as coverage can be poor outside of cities.

Cheapskate options - use the library. Look for a free wifi hotspot (not for secure transactions though).
