turkey holiday or not?

Hi, We are looking to go on holiday in August (unfortunately I work in schools so has to be then!) somewhere warm...wanted a change from Spain so were looking at Turkey but seems to be coming out v expensive. Not bothered about it being super hot but like it around late 20s...shorts and bikini weather. We are a family of 5 ages ranging (in aug) 13 to 20,. Kids not bothered about night life paritcularly and were thinking of villa (quoted around 350-550 for week in Yalikavic on Bodrum peninsula as looks nice town/village and sightseeing in area) but flights seem v v v expensive! Looked at packages but they are all coming out at around £5000...which seems a lot for what the reviews say on each hotel in Trip adviser? Like restaurants within walking distance, not British pubs particularly, will prob hire a car (tho that seems v expensive too!) am hoping cheap to eat out or wd we be better going all inclusive (not huge eaters and drinkers really) Don't know where to go with this..anyone out there offer some pointers?! Seem to have spent HOURS looking...should I start all over again and choose somewhere totally different?! Ever grateful thanks if someone out there could help!

Hi there, just did a quick search as I have just booked for two weeks in Turkey. Two weeks self catering for 5 people in a 2 bed apartment, going to Altinkum in turkey on 9th August from Manchester, total price £1633.28 including flights, accommodation and transfers. I don't think I am allowed to post the link here, but the website is sunshine and I have used them before and booked again with them this year. You can put in different dates and airports etc to find the best deal, I think they're fab.
Hope this helps.

Just thought would post a bit more information about Turkey as we went there last year and have booked again this year. We went to Olu Deniz, 4 adults and 2 children, over 3 separate rooms. We really liked the fact that the shop keepers etc in Olu Deniz did not pester you like some other places in Turkey. The beach in Olu Deniz isn't great, despite the photos you see posted everywhere, it is quite rocky and pebbly and the water goes deep very quickly. We were quite happy by the pool, but if you like the beach, then other resorts such as Altinkum would be better.
We found it to be very cheap. The hotel meals were pretty good. Food is quite basic in Turkey anyway, but there was always something that our kids liked to eat from the hotel buffet and lots of lovely desserts. Food at lunchtimes in the pool bar was very reasonably priced, as were ice creams/lollies (equivalent of £1 for magnums and less for ice lollies).
If you're looking for good value I don't think you will do better than Turkey, if you can find the right deal.0 -
As post above states we have done turkey before for around £500 each in the summer for a decent hotel in marmaris and dalaman 13 nights , You will find it hotter than spain in august (around mid 30s+) plus i find it hard enough to cross the road yet hire a car . They are MAD MAD MAD . I was in a taxi going to Marmaris when a young girl (approx 15yo) went past on a motorbike with 2 passengers no helmets putting make up on while texting on her phone . hard as nails on the internet . wimp in the real world :cool:0

One thing you might want to bear in mind about Turkey is that in August the temperature may be in the region of 45 degrees and upwards.0

Have a look at ;
www weatherinturkey.org.uk
It shows you the weather, by region and month which is useful if you are deciding when and where to go.
There was another one, i'll see if I can find it again.0 -
Ive been to Turkey 4 times and I would never goto Bodrum again it has put me off turkey, marmaris and oul deniz is lovely...
Flights are alwayts expensive to turkey, have a look at packages and see if you can get cheaper, i know someone with a villa who books a package and goes to his villa as it is cheaper!!0 -
I would just like to say I would never ever go back to Olu Deniz. Beach is awful, nothing like the photos and we heard so many stories about breakins in holiday villas.. the last day of our holiday we were broken in to. All I can say is thank god my husband is a police officer as it was his intution that lead him to a man in our lounge at 5 in the morning. This man was after people not possessions. He had broken into 4 other Villas that night and touched children.
Olu deniz/Hiaronu/Ovacik areas are rife with it.. and the police couldnt give a to** didnt even bother to come
My daughter also suffered heat stroke, not sun stroke she came back without a tan but the heat in the shade alone was too much for her and she was very sick.
I really really would suggest somewhere cooler or if you really want to go and are not bothered about nightlife then Dalyan is beautiful. Little nightlife but beautiful beaches beyond words (famous turtle beach) food more authentic, alot less crime so you will feel safe and prices far more reasonable
Not trying to scare you about other parts of Turkey but by god I wish someone had warned me0 -
Gosh that's an awful thing to happen in Olu Deniz.
We've been multiple times and never had, seen or heard of any trouble. It's one of the nicest and friendliest places I've been too, and we've made good friends with locals out there. Here I go again on my own....0
