If you are not buying an original make sure that the spare is from a reputable manufacterer like Hahnel. Why??

You get a better warranty and a better quality product. Cheapo batteries can damage your camera(as any generic one is modified for your camera) and can be very dangerous(could overheat).
  • Hi!
I have now got the Panasonic DMC-FX9 which was on special offer online at Comet recently to replace my four year old olympus. Features in the new camera that I like are the small size (it will fit into my pocket, although generally it gets carried round in a case) and the image stabilisation means there are fewer pictures ruined due to camera shake.

If you haven't had a digital camera before the following may be useful. A digitial camera is liberating when compared with a film one - there is no need to think am I wasting a shot on my 24/36 exposure film. For that reason alone you'll take more pictures. You will need 2 x the biggest memory card you can afford (1Gb?) and a spare battery. Digital zoom is a waste of time but optical zoom helps no end. I wouldn't get too carried away with megapixels, my Olympus is 3 megapixels and the Panasonic is 6 megapixels, but there is no noticeable difference in the quality of normal sized prints. My new camera takes SD cards and I bought slightly higher speed (50x) Kingston manufactured ones which seem to work well in my camera as I've taken movies with it as well as repeated (every third of a second) pictures.

For what it's worth I bought the camera and case from https://www.comet.co.uk, the battery from https://www.7dayshop.com and the memory from https://www.mymemory.co.uk. I have an awful lot of sympathy with your aim of buying over the counter, but I would suggest get the memory and possibly the battery online...

    Regards

    Kevin

another offer for you to think about Scouce, just a bit more expensive and isn't a pocket job but has some very nice looking features and will wipe the floor with a pocket sized camera!

Wowsers, never thought this would bring up such discussion. Would love that BIG camera but really am looking for a little pocket one! Went to Jessops and asked him about different ones, he said he'd brought the Canon and he thought it was the best for the price and features! Obviously i didn't get the camer from there as it was £50 deaer, which will pay for the 1 Gig memory stick. Going to see if i need an extra battery after i've used it a few times tho!! Amazon seem about the cheapest, but going to do one last check before ordering!

Just like to say thanks to everyone who came on with advice or links! :T :)

DAK what the main difference between the Nikon 4600 (4MP) and Nikon L4 is?

Argos sell the 4600, and seen Dixons and pixmania sell the L4. Cant see any obvious difference from the specs.
  • Have been into Jessops today as I am having the same problem in choosing a digi camera. I have a Fujifine pix and find althouth the 10X zoom is great the size of the camera does mean I don't bother taking it at times as its a little big. I would like a camera that slides into the pocket for easy transport but also has great features and takes good pictures. Used to have an old cannon eos slr and loved it but today size is the problem.
The Girl in Jessops was great, ones to look at, seem to be the cannon a700 the panasonic at abou£170 or the old fuji at about £147.
Seem to be moving towards the cannon a700 don't realy know why just gut feeling.
The measure of love is love without measure
