Hi again, i've read through some reviews and the Canon does come out very good. Like you say i do need to have a proper play with it in the shop before buying though.

One other question, what size SD card would i need? Mostly photo's but some movie. Plus how much and where from and is there a difference between makes/speeds?

My view is that you won't ever regret taking too many photos but you may regret taking too few. I would say 512mb as a minimum. If I have a day out then I usually would fill that size memory card. If you want it for snapshots then 256 mb might be enough.

The speed affects how quickly the camera can take photos in Sports/Continous shooting mode. It also impacts on the upload speed whenn you transfer your photos to your PC. The difference can be significant.

I would go for a standard type of card unless you want to do a lot of continous shots (i.e sports or animals).

    Try: http://www.picstop.co.uk/

I've heard they are cheap and fast.

Most of the non-branded SD memory cards are actually made in bulk by Toshiba. You could actually get a 1GB SD Viking card for £14 from Amazon. The card is good enough for normal digicam usage.

Can't believe how cheap they are!!! Wowsers!!!

Is there anything else i'd need? Spare battery? Case?(are they robust?)

Try and get it all in one go!! LOL The missus will be happy! :D

Thanks for all your help so far, need to get to a camera shop now! :)

Get a spare battery. They are really cheap if you buy a non-branded one (my spare cost £7). I quite often use two bateries in a day especially if I am zooming a lot.

Get a case as well. Protect your investment! Get one with a pocket inside to hold spare memory cards + battery.

You know just to really confuse things I saw TWO Sony H1 camera's as Managers special's in argos for just £225 each last Sunday - They were just missing the outer cardboard for the box I think - Now if you are at all serious about snapping and don't mind a slightly bigger camera (not a pocket job) then this would be an absolute bargain! Fantastic optical zoom x12! image stabilizer, EVF just an amazing camera!
Actually, I didn't buy for two main reasons, 1. No bulb mode amongst other little snags 2. the pictures I saw on review in Auto mode were jaw droppingly good - Believe it or not I don't want a camera that will do all the work for you LOL - I want to feel like I have put some effort into the shot, which is why I might go for a S/H coolpix 8700 :D
Anyway, might be worth nipping to your local Argos and looking on the top shelf behind pickup to see what they have on offer?
Oh did I say camera above had an original catalogue price of £350!?!

I bought mine from Jessops when I bought my camera. It's nothing fancy. It's padded nylon with a belt loop. On the inside of the flap is a mesh pocket for the spare battery. I've had a look on Amazon and Jessops website however they don't have my one (made by Caselogic). I'd say you should be able to pick up one up for £10-15.
