Gurgling in boiler

I have a worcester bosch Greenstar Ri boiler and when it has come on this morning there are a lot of gurgling noises as the water is going through it and it keeps switching on and off. Any help would be appreciated before I contact a plumber.

    Hi

    GSR.

I had the same problem with a Worcester Bosch 18Ri overnight, the condensate tube goes into a utility room sink waste (not used much) that has frozen outside, the constant condensate dripping must have built up.

As a temporary measure I've disconnected the condensate tube from the bottom of the boiler and have it draining into a washing up bowl, the boiler worked and recovered stright away after doing this. I'll defrost the waste pipe when conditions improve.

Thankyou so much, :j Have just been outside with my microwaveable backwarmers and buckets of hot water and after a large gurgling noise it is now fine.

i have had the same problem with my worcerter combi boiler ie frozen condensate pipe and gurgling so thawed pipe out and boiler worked fine after that but does anyone know if the water backing up in the boiler does any pemanent damage to the boiler that could cause problems at a later date. If there are any central heating guy on here who could give advice many thanks

Just discovered the exact same problem with the same boiler, just trying to defrost the pipe as I can't manage to unscrew it, hope it works!

Couldn't defrost the pipe so have cut part of it off (will reconnect it)

    working again now :-)

    Thanks v much
  • I had a new Biasi condensing combi boiler fitted around 5 weeks ago, all was well until Wednesday last week when a loud bang was heard from the porch where the boiler had been installed. Basically the condensate pipe had frozen but rather than just trip the boiler out which I would have expected the boiler had ruptured, the biasi engineer came out to inspect and told me as this was 'frost' damage I probably will not be covered by the guarantee. I would have thought that under the sale of goods act an item must be 'fit for purpose' if a boiler is not capable of heating a cold house without failing catastrophically I would say it certainly isn't. I would expect a boiler to last 20 years and not 5 weeks and I certainly am not happy about the possibilty of having to shell out for a replacement so soon after paying for the first one. Could anyone advise me if I have any recourse to claim for a refund or replacement from the company who supplied me with the boiler?

???? NO Frost Stat, seems strange!

  • I'm told a lot of installers have become complacent over the last few years, ie 'we never have really long and cold periods' I suppose I'm just unlucky, the previous boiler though not a condensing model had been sited in the same position for the last 25 years with no problems but only five weeks worth out of this one.

I thought that it was worth rekindling this thread (with other links) from early this year as we are now in another cold snap and people may get boiler problems.

If you have a condensing boiler keep an eye out that the condensate pipe does not become frozen, if it does and you get a gurgling sound from the boiler either defrost the pipe or if you can undo the condensate pipe where it comes out of the boiler (check boiler instructions) and let it drain (drip) into a bowl or similar container. Boiler should drain and be able to fire up again, possibly a reset button may need to be pressed as well.
