Gurgling in boiler

I will just say at this point that this is NOT a gas emergency situation so if you have a service contract with British Gas or similar it is they who need to attend. Please do not burden the Gas Emergency Service with calls which have nothing to do with them at this busy time of year. Defrost it yourself with a kettle or ring your service provider.

If you have a condensing boiler keep an eye out that the condensate pipe does not become frozen, if it does and you get a gurgling sound from the boiler either defrost the pipe or if you can undo the condensate pipe where it comes out of the boiler (check boiler instructions) and let it drain (drip) into a bowl or similar container. Boiler should drain and be able to fire up again, possibly a reset button may need to be pressed as well.

This problem is quite common in very cold weather when the pipe is routed outside.

If possible, and I have done this with my boiler, insulate the pipe outside with some foam type lagging (from B&Q/homebase etc) - it has certainly done the trick with my boiler.
