You should throw away milk 3 days after opening it

Also, if you do accidently swallow some and it has gone off, or is on the turn, it won't do you any harm. It's not like you will get food poisoning or something. I only chuck it if it smells/tastes off.0

I think you should throw away milk only when it fails the sniff test
and I think we should not allow ourselves to be taken in by ever-so-persuasive marketing myths designed to part us from our hard earned cash!
... don't throw the string away. You always need string!

nope. Dont agree. Course I have had more than a few milks go off before the sell by date - think thats due to how long Tescos leave it lying about before bottling tbh..But when I was at Uni in Leeds years ago in a rented houseshare I remember buying a pint of milk and it lasting me the best part of a week in a little camping fridge I had in my room. What Would Bill Buchanan Do?0

Use your nose - its what its there for, and stop believing all the hype put out from the government. A lot of produce lasts longer than they would have you believe, its just to force you to consume more.
Jonathan Maitland's program sums it up.

I use someone elses nose as milk stinks, off or not to me. I've nearly thrown fresh milk out accidentally until DS2 drank some. I'll be honest, it's rare a bottle open lasts a full day here with drinking/cooking. I don't buy large bottles, get it delivered in 2 pints from milkman Mon/Wed/Fri as I struggle to lift it some mornings before meds kick in & if DS2 helps himself he spills it.One day I might be more organised...........

Slinkies target 2018 - another 70lb off (half way to what the NHS says) so far 25lb0 -
We buy a couple trays of UHT milk (24 litres) every couple of weeks from ALDI as they have nice screw tops on em. Its incredibly convenient, although some people don't like the taste.
We used to motorhome around mainland Europe where fresh milk is incredibly scarce, so we had to develop a taste for UHT.
In our hourse, a 1L carton doesn't last long enough for it to go off.0 -
I only buy organic milk, but heard that Channel Islands milk is one of the better milks, so may try that for a while.
I didn't know you could still get Channel Islands milk but that's probably because I haven't been looking for it. I wouldn't say it's actually "better" but it is (or was) much creamier than normal, unhomogenised, whole milk. That's probably due to the lush pasture and the happy Guernsey cattle they're milking.
Now it's been brought up I'm going to see if I can find some. I remember how that top-of-the-milk on my cereal tasted and want to re-live it now.0 -
Just checked my fridge and the Waitrose organic whole milk dated UB 23 December is perfectly OK. We don't use much milk here and I've made an effort to drink green tea rather than the usual stuff so it's not had many inroads. Had a glug of it and it's not off or even nearly off.
Used to have a colleague who wouldn't use milk the day after it was bought - bonanza time for me as he'd bring in 2 pints every day and then leave it. So, it came home with me!
For me/us it's a case of common sense and not being led up a garden path of someone else's choosing.0 -
Sniff and taste test here. In general I ignore best before and use by dates and judge by smell and taste. I've never had food poisoning from home cooking (touch wood...)0

If it smells iffy then I wouldn't drink it but I would probably use it to make some scones with. But if I had too much milk and rather than see it go off I make a rice pud or a banana custard.semolina is also nice and warming on a winters day.Plus if you have a pud then you don't need such a large dinner so it helps to cut back on portions.I was brought up with milk puds in the 1950s and the only one I wasn't keen on was tapioca( frogs spawn) but the rest were fine and helped to fill you up.0
