We would have to give up buying milk if we scrapped it 3 days after opening, we use very little.
I apply the old fashioned method, give it a sniff and if it smells ok continue to use it...never drink it on its own.

Qualify what is meant by Milk?Milk these days is homogonised rubbish. All the cream has been removed and sold on separately, and you are left with milky water.
Yes, milk of yester-year needed to be used within a few days. Now it lasts a good 12 days as it's been beaten to an inch of it's life.
There are different types of best before labels.
Best before x ( still usually fine after this date)
Use before x ( best not chance it afterwards)
Use before x after opening. ( best not cvhance it afterwards due to air exposure)
Ok. Semi-skimmed milk is semi-skimmed milk - it shouldn't depend on what label the supermarket puts on it. How many days air exposure do you think is OK for semi-skimmed milk?0 -

How long milk keeps whether it is opened or not depends largely on how cold your fridge is, as well as how often the fridge is open and for how long (which raises the temperature). The bacteria normally present in milk can grow quite rapidly at temperatures above 6 degrees C but grow very slowly at 0-2 degrees C. So if your fridge is running slightly warm or the milk is out of the fridge regularly, for even relatively short peiods of time it will go off more quickly.0

That's what I do, if it seems ok I use it in drinks, cereal etc and if not I use it for baking.“Ordinary riches can be stolen, real riches cannot. In your soul are infinitely precious things that cannot be taken from you.” - Oscar Wilde0 -

Have found that UHT, as well as lasting longer unopened, also lasts a bit longer once opened. Ditto skimmed versus semi or full fat.
Unfortunately I don't trust my sense of smell/taste to tell me when something is off!0 -

Actually it's not.
Semi-skimmed milk varies greatly.
I know someone who works for the milk board.
They deliver Milk.
The supermarkets then process it again and take all the cream out and sell on the colored water. some take out more cream than others. I belive Co-op actually sell the best so called supermarket Milk
The use by date is a good indicator. Long life and it's been sterilized to death and not much cream remains, shorter life and you're getting a little bit more from the cow.
However, generally, after it has been opened, I find it lasts well over 3 days. Might not taste as fresh on your cornflakes on day 5 day, but is fine for cooking tea/coffee etc
Usually tell when itr's turned as it splits if you add it to hot drinks. Can't tell these days by smell alone, as there is little go go off within the coloured water.
With a full fat milk, if you can call it full fat, still been processed to death, you would smell off milk quite clearly.0 -
