My fridge is amazing and on the odd occasion my son is not around (he likes his milk) I have had a carton opened for at least 2 weeks and it has been fine, I only ever chuck it if it whiffs (I also have a terrible habit of sniffing it everytime I open the carton even if it is a fresh on

Unfortunately I don't trust my sense of smell/taste to tell me when something is off!
What rot- humans survived for thousands upon thousands of years with nothing but their sense of smell/taste to tell them whether something was fit to eat or not. It's very sad if you have to be told by some (often quite arbitrary) label on an anonymous package.0 -

I do the sniff test EVERYtime I open the milk too!!!
I finally binned some 19th Dec milk yesterday as it had been fine so I really don't worry about dates. If it looks ok, smells ok and tastes ok then use it. I have now moved on to a bottle with expiry date of 31st December which is totally fine still.
It's not like we only started drinking milk after best before dates and use by dates and people survived!0 -
If it's really gone off it will be obvious from the smell or taste. But milk rarely lasts longer than 3 days in our house even though we buy 3 litre bottles of it. OH drinks a lot of milk.
I am quite fussy about use by dates (I don't worry too much about best before dates) but I will use milk that is one day past its date. If it's any older than that I usually find that it starts to smell bad.0 -
Oooo, are we arguing about milk?
I'm the same as most, sniff it first, if it passes that then it gets a sip test, and then it's good to be drunk.
I don't ever look at the label on milk, except when buying it.
I am away regularly for long weekends and often use the opened milk thats in the fridge when I return, never had a problem.2 angels in heaven :A0 -

I quite agree. Take a mouthful of milk. If it's off, you'll know about it, believe me!0 -
Actually it's not.
Semi-skimmed milk varies greatly.
I know someone who works for the milk board.
They deliver Milk.
The supermarkets then process it again and take all the cream out and sell on the colored water. some take out more cream than others. I belive Co-op actually sell the best so called supermarket Milk
The use by date is a good indicator. Long life and it's been sterilized to death and not much cream remains, shorter life and you're getting a little bit more from the cow.
However, generally, after it has been opened, I find it lasts well over 3 days. Might not taste as fresh on your cornflakes on day 5 day, but is fine for cooking tea/coffee etc
Usually tell when itr's turned as it splits if you add it to hot drinks. Can't tell these days by smell alone, as there is little go go off within the coloured water.
With a full fat milk, if you can call it full fat, still been processed to death, you would smell off milk quite clearly.
It's funny you should mention the Co-op as this is where I buy my milk. Ido as others & if it smells fine I use it, & I've used Co-op milk up to around 10 days AFTER the date on the carton because it's still been okay.0 -

I buy milk if it's marked down, and actually find it quite disturbing how long milk will last before it smells bad. Some of my kids are funny and one comments "they put the dates on for a reason" and he wont touch any food that is even on it BBF date.
For me and all the food I eat and cook, if it smells OK and tastes OK, then it's probably OK.
I am currently trying to get my family to move back to whole milk, it's ridiculous that it's being called a high fat food in everything else if a food has less than 5% fat it is classed as low fat.
I only buy organic milk, but heard that chenel island milk is one of the better milks, so may try that for a while. There is nothing either good or bad but thinking makes it so.0 -
I use a mix of "off" milk and water to spray on some veggie plants, like courgettes, to ward off fungal diseases like powdery mildew. (Like the old plain yoghurt for thrush trick.) It's actually quite hard to make milk turn properly, belive me! It usually involves me leaving a half used container of semi-skimmed in the airing cupboard for two weeks or so. So I'm not worried about keeping milk a week or so in the fridge even if opened.
Oh and before someone suggests souring the milk with lemon juice, that's the wrong sort of sour for this purpose.Val.0
