in Phones & TV
Ok, moving in a new build in a few weeks, then i'll be NTL Free
Going Freeview btw for TV for now!
So i'll have the £124.99 for BT connection, then £11 a month line rental for a minimum of 12 months, so....
..for calls & Broadband what is my best option? I have the Dialler box, so will 1899 or similar CPS be my best option, calls will be made 95% in the evenings and weekends mostly local! Broadband - 1MB will do with 2 gig monthly limit!
I know there is alot of information about alot on diferent line rental packages, as i am stuck for 12 months i would just like a hand as i get confused
Thanks in advance!

Telephony
Local/National makes no difference now (all 01 & 02 calls cost the same).
Best options IMHO as per the 'HERE' link in my signature below.Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0 -
Thanks Heinz, I already printed out your link, kind of a telephone bible
2 quick questions -
So with the Primus Option 2, i just sign up and evening and weekend cals are free? So if i stuck between these times, local/natioanl calls would cost me a penny? is there a connection charge at all with these?
And there is no metion of broadband on there! shame, shamejoking, but as i have my line rental fixed at BT for 12 months, does that mean i have to stick to there broadnband?
Thanks0 -
Once your Primus Option 2 goes live (takes about 3 weeks), calls of up to 90 minutes to UK 01/02 calls between 6pm and 8am weekdays and, in effect, between 6pm Friday and 8am Monday are completely free (no connection charge or anything). I've slipped up a few times but my first 5 monthly bills were 12p, 55p, 4p, 4p and 11p (my daytime calls go via 1899 at 3p each and I use 18185 and 1280 prefixes as appropriate too).
From your point of view, the bonus is that, with a BT landline, not only can you opt for a CPS to route your calls and use 1899 etc. but you can also take your choice of numerous BB providers now.
I live in a small village with a tiny BT exchange 200 yards away so I took the obvious option of staying with BT when BB eventually arrived here (last year). Yes, at £17.99 for up to 8mB with a 2gB download limit, it's quite expensive but it suits me and, most importantly, it works!Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Well that's me Telephone sorted then : thanks!
What about Primus for Broadband, i am alittle confused as the link to primus option 2 for telephone is at http://www.planet-talk.co.uk/ and i can see no sign of broadband?0 -
Although I currently use Bulldog (only cos they installed my line for £1), I'm a big fan of Madasafish - just visit their website and see how fast and responsive it is - I've always been extremely impressed by the speed at which their website loads; presumably a good indication of the quality of their data backbone. They also won an ISPA award recently.
I have used them in the past, and at other locations other than my home and found them to be extremely helpful, reliable, and the service is good. They've been around a while too... I remember having had an unlimited dial-up service with them a few years back (how retro!)
***Board Guide note, sorry but I have had to remove your link to the Referral Board although I know you are not on the thread linked too:)***
Oops... sorry Edinburghlass... was only trying to be helpful!Fasthosts ruined my life0 -
The link to Primus Saver Option 2 (make sure you specify exactly that when you call - it's not a well-advertised option) is THIS ONE (I can't find it on their main website either).
They're new into broadband - ask them about it when you call. The e-mail I received from them on 24/4/06 was:Dear Mr. Heinz
You asked me to let you know when Primus introduces Broadband. Well the time has come and we are now able to offer your our new Broadband service.
Primus Broadband offers,
·Both 1MB and 2MB High speed broadband.
·FREE connection (worth £50)
·FREE modem (worth £29.99)
·FREE techincal support (0800 number)
·Activation within 7 working days
·Generous discounts when taking broadband with any Primus call plan.
·Unlimited monthly usage.*
What does it cost??
As a Primus Saver customer, you are entitled to a discount on both the cost of our standard 1MB broadband package, AND our full 2MB broadband service:
1 Mb - 12 months - £17.99 - £ 3.00 = £14.99
1 Mb - 18 months - £17.99 - £ 4.00 = £13.99
2 Mb - 12 months - £23.99 - £ 7.00 = £ 16.99
2 Mb - 18 months - £22.99 - £ 7.00 = £ 15.99
For Saver customers, this means it is possible to have all your evening and weekend calls for free + 1 Mb broadband for 12 months for only £14.99 a month!! (Best package for your son)

Thanks
So for - 1 Mb - 12 months - £17.99 - £ 3.00 = £14.99 (And that's unlimited i think) I get free evening and weekend cals and unlimited broadband.
So Line rental - £11
Broadband & calls - £14.99
Freeview - Free
Total - £25.99 a month! + a maximum of £2 for daily calls, whcih is low!
That's better than the £48 i currently pay!
So can i call and get them both at the same time, or should i get the phone package first, then sign up to broadband?0 -
Unfortunately, you can't do anything re Primus until the BT line is operational at your new place.
However, as soon as you know the telephone number BT will allocate, you can sign up for 1899 - so 3p per call (to UK 01/02 numbers) telephony is available to you as soon as you move in.
I think the * beside the Unlimited monthly usage part of that e-mail was meant to refer to a 'fair use' condition (although it wasn't there).
Wow! £2 for daily calls! At 3p each on 1899 between 8am and 6pm, that's 66 calls (6 or 7 every hour). Just kidding.Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Generally speaking, it's best to do the CPS (calls) first, then add the broadband afterwards; from a provisioning point of view, it can really screw things up at the exchange trying to do both things simultaneously, and will ultimately delay either your CPS to Primus, or broadband, or both.
It takes about 10 working days to activate the CPS, and another 10 days for the broadband. Good luck - looks like a cracking package Sir Heinz has whipped up for you there!Fasthosts ruined my life0 -
Heinz - with a new line installation from BT, how long do you have to wait before you can CPS the calls to Primus? Is it still three months, providing you don't take out any fancy call packages thereby tying yourself into a 12 month contract?Fasthosts ruined my life0
