Think I'm going to be stuck at work!!

Drove to work this morning and just before getting here the windscreen wipers on my car completely stopped working. I can't get them to work at all and its snowing so I don't know what I'm going to do. I can't drive home when it's snowing without windscreen wipers, but where I live there is no public transport so I can't get a bus or train etc home either.
I really don't know what to do, do you generally ring someone to pick the car up ( some form of breakdown service?? ) just because your windscreen wipers don't work? I don't have breakdown cover though so I'm guessing this won't come cheap, then there's still the problem of me getting home

I am useless with cars and mechanics but don't like to think of you without a response.
From other forums, it looks like snow can loosen the bolt that attaches the wipers (very technical this). I have no idea if this is something that you can have a look at yourself but hopefully someone else may jump in at this point....:heartsmil When you find people who not only tolerate your quirks but celebrate them with glad cries of "Me too!" be sure to cherish them. Because these weirdos are your true family.0 -
Give your local dealer a call and ask them if there is anything that you can do, to get you home, might be a fuse or something simple that you can easily rectify.0

Phone the AA, I was on the way to a uni interview many years ago now when the windscreen wipers actually flew off the car in torrential rain. The AA came and towed us to a garage who sorted out the windscreen wipers. Phone them now. Good luck!0

I live out of the way really, no-one lives nearby that could give me a lift. Plus the area I work in isn't exactly the nicest of places and the car park isn't secure so I'm really reluctant to leave the car overnight ( You can pretty much guarantee it will be stolen or vandalised )
I have pets that need feeding and one is on medication so I really need to get home if possible. Plus I don't really have the cash to pay for a hotel overnight ( the only nearby hotel is the hilton! )
The car is still under warranty so I'm assuming that I will have to take the car to an approved dealer, how the hell am I meant to get there though?! lolGoing to get to grips with food shopping again, starting February!

I'd try a local garage to see if they can take a look.
Or if you have a friend at work that has AA cover (that you can say you are giving a lift home to), get them to call as AA / RAC cover the person not the car. I know its not the right thing to do, but would help you out for now.
Then join a breakdown service for the future, it will cost you a fortune with the RAC if you're not already a member.
My dad had the same problem with wipers and the RAC fixed it but it took a while, so yeah it would be the sort of thing to call them for. Hope you get it sorted!0 -
I see you managed to find somewhere to use the internet then?
Striving to clear the mortgage before it finishes in Dec 2028 - amount currently owed - £18,886.270 -
Yeah as I said I'm at work and we have internet access here....
I'm going to go up to the car park now and see if I can fiddle around with it and hope that it miraculously starts working again ( well I can hope can't I! )
If not I think I'm just going to have to bite the bullet and ring the AAGoing to get to grips with food shopping again, starting February!

Open the car manual, find the fusebox section, check the fuse for the wipers. It may have blown if you tried to use the wipers while frozen in place.
Or you may have damaged the wiper motor/gear linkage by doing the same.
Or it could be a coincidence, and just needs a general repair of some other description. If it isn't snowing or raining at home time, I'd chance it. But if you cannot see through the screen, don't do it.
Oh, and you have checked that the blades aren't frozen against the glass - right?0
