We've just had extortionate bills from BT for downloading, I would like to change but we're on an 18 month contract. So what I'd like to know is, could we run BT broadband and 02 broadband from the same phoneline?

Unfortunately not, you need to get a MAC (a code of letters and numbers) which is unique to your line and has to be passed from one ISP to another. You would need to contact BT, pay to get out of the contract, get the MAC and tell O2...if BT make it that simple.0
