School closures are snow joke

Perhaps you might like to re-read what I said-

    1. We haven't had any severe weather in this part of the country. We've had maybe 2cm of snow all week and on Tuesday and Wednesday the temperature didn't drop below freezing.

    2. All the main roads in the area have been easily passable all week, even during our one and only snow shower which lasted all of one hour on Tuesday. All public transport has been running to schedule all week.

    3. It appeared that most of the teachers and a large number of kids had already safely arrived at the school only to be turned away.

As I keep saying I realise that in some parts of the country the weather is exceptionally bad. But it isn't here. It may be difficult to understand if you live somewhere where there's six inches of snow and temperatures are -20c but do you really believe that it's acceptable to close a close a school because there's a centimetre of snow on the pavement outside?

Well it must have been something else then, which forced them to close. Perhaps you will get a full explanation in due course, or perhaps you could phone up as ask for details.

No it wasn't anything else. My wife asked the teacher who was turning people away why the school was closed and the teacher said it was because the snow (all 1cm or so of it) meant it was too dangerous for anyone to risk trying to get there. This was AFTER she and my daughter, as well as a large number of other parents and kids, had already safely got there.

The closure was down to nothing more than someone over-reacting and deciding to pass the buck (not the teachers and quite probably not the head).

We seem to have forgotten the skiving teachers though dont we Andy? Quite a few posters wont have seen your first post because you amended it.
It wasnt so much the why are the schools closed that got my back up, and many others, it was the way you spoke about the teachers. Apart from that I would agree with some of your comments.
Our schools reopened today, the weather here is atrocious today,as it has been all week. But after the parents got to work on the carpark and play ground its safe enough for the children so school has reopened.
Maybe a bit of pull together in a time of difficulty was/is needed, after all it would be to the benifit of everyone. We seem to have lost a lot of the pull together attitude that our country was famous for.
Maybe a bit of thought before the fingers started typing might have saved a lot of ill feelings in what was/is a good thread.

What is the point in village childen only at a school of 60(primary) that they open for 8 kids. And 4 dont bother so open a school for 4 kids. With our money. Teachers just do that as its an easy day and they get paid which is just a scam in my opinion.
Work in progress...Update coming July 2012.

I'm not entirely sure what this means but if it means what I think it means then as far as I'm concerned it's the parents that have got questions to answer here, not the teachers. In the case of most village primary schools I know of a large proporation of the pupils live within walking distance of the school. So why did only four kids get there, especially if the teachers had made it. Presumably most of the parents in your area believe that building snowmen is more important than their child's education but I can assure that if I lived wherever this school is then there would have been five kids present. Then again perhaps I've completly misunderstood what you're trying to say. Or perhaps I'm a horrible dad (I think my daughter might agree with that :D).

My children's school was closed for 3 days this week as the heating pipes in part of the school had burst, showing the affected area in hot water. They worked for 3 days getting it fixed and the kids were back yesterday.

Today the very same thing happened in the staff room, the pipe went spewing out hot water and brought the ceiling down.

I would rather the school was shut while the PFI sorted this out, instead of hoping that should it go again, it's not a classroom full of pupils that get scalded and then have the ceiling cave in on them.

Yes this thread has moved on :D

We are now discussing ( rightly ) the lack of communication between school ( local authority )and parents .

Perhaps a meeting with all those concerned , would come to some sensible
recommendation. In these days of mass information there should be a system put into place.
School web page / phone tree would be a start

Nearly all the schools in our county have closed. I was surprised to read that several of them had run out of heating oil. That is VERY bad housekeeping!:p

I have had an oil delivery myself this week and it seems that there are no probs with deliveries around the county.
