Landlords renewing boilers.

The council flat i have moved into, has a really old boiler which stands on the floor and the council say they won't replace it. It must date from the 60's as it is green.
Now i could have sworn there was a law on this, that i could quote at them. Does anybody know?

A law on what? Requiring councils to provide their tenants with brand spanking new facilities? Dream on.
The council are required to provide you with a means to heat the property. If the current facilities work, why should they spend money changing them?"Now to trolling as a concept. .... Personally, I've always found it a little sad that people choose to spend such a large proportion of their lives in this way but they do, and we have to deal with it." - MSE Forum Manager 6th July 20100 -
Sadly no law forcing anyone to change my boiler FOC

The only law is that they must maintain the boiler in a good condition, so providing it is serviced and working safely that's all they have to do.0 -
But surely boilers of 40 plus years old are more expensive to run and contribute to global warming.0

I thought you said it was "green"0

No, your use of it contributes to global warming.
Scrapping a perfectly good (but old) boiler and manufacturing a new one to save you a few quid on your bills would arguably contribute far more to global warming.0 -
Id be quite impressed if the boiler is 40 years old.0

I work with British Gas Services and have came across alot of boilers 40+ years. They do cost alot more to run but costomers with these boilers do love them and dont want to replace them as they are very hard wearing, compaired to others.0

Could be worth seeing if you can get it replaced under the Warm Front scheme.
The Council would have to give permission though.

We live in rented house and our landlords arrange and pay for the annual maintenance check on our 'old' boiler but then we have to pay them the amount back. Does anyone know if this is standard or is there anything we can do - I would have thought it was their responsibility as the landlord not ours?0

Surely they will just increase the rent to cover it - assuming they are not some sort of charity?0
