Best internet packages

Hello

My dear old mum is wishing to change her internet package.

I havent a clue where to begin really.

She is currently on Orange broad band, only gets about 2 meg speed, lives in Cornwall. Pays £17.99 a month for unlimited use. She does not have a wireless set up.
She wishes to stay with BT for her phone calls so is not really interested in changing the whole thing if you know what i mean??

I think she could do with getting a wireless connection, and perhaps something faster if this is possible? I think she would like to spend a bit less a month and perhaps look at 12 month contracts rather than 18. And i think keeping the umlimted usage is a must.

So any tips or pointers?

Thanks guys

I'd go with 02 if you can. Type 'sam knows' in Google and select 'broadband checker' to see if your mother can receive 02 (preferably on an LLU-enabled network).

Also, see their website for further info; you can see which package will suit best. And the good news is that all their packages are on a 12-month contract (as you'd like).

Let us know what you decide :)
  • I have heard that O2 is currently offering a nice package.

O2, but only if your mum's exchange is LLU enabled, I wouldn't advise going with O2 via their Access package, it has been problematic.

Plusnet may also be worth considering, they have several packages to choose from.
  • O2 doesnt seem to be available! whats all this LLU enabled stuff etc? Alot of these packages seem to say you have to change you phone line package as well, my mum just wants to stay with bt for that part if i'm making any sense?!

That's a pity. What does Sam Knows show is available on your mum's exchange?

LLU is local loop unbundling where the BB operater has installed its own equipment into the exchange.

Some do and some don't. O2/BE only require you to have a BT line.

That's certainly the case at the moment, but both Be* and O2 are in the process of introducing Home Phone line rental, they could end up going the same way as TalkTalk and AOL, for example.

Be* have set their home phoneline rental at £9.90, and, restructured their broadband packages, haven't heard what O2 will be charging for their homephone rental yet..

That would be a shame if they do - hopefully it won't be mandatory.
  • They have a checker which you could use to see what it costs in that area. As I understand it the variation by location is because what they pay BT Wholesale depends on the area served.

    "Value" suits a modest user.
  • god im confused and i'm only 27, no wonder my poor mum doesnt know what is what and hasnt bothered changing her package lol.
  • Right, first step fill in the details in the broadband checker at Samknows

    http://www.samknows.com/broadband/checker2.php

that will tell you what your mum CAN have.

A bit about her style of internet usage will help to answer if "unlimited" is a real requirement.

Wireless (within a home) is a separate question but most suppliers will support this.

    How important is price ?
