    Hi All,

As agreed this evening on the Friday Night Drink thread I have set this thread up so we can all chat about depression / anxiety and related illnesses and the problems / treatments etc. associated with them.

Just a message from me -

I would like this thread to be a positive and friendly place for people to be able to talk openly about their problems and get support.

    Hi Guys - welcome!
I was worried for a minute when I came back to this thread and saw a whole bunch of posters I'd not heard of - thought I'd forgotten to take the tablets!:rotfl:
This thread has been going a while now & people here are really helpful & friendly. We all just help each other out. Just posting to people you know understand makes a big difference - sometimes all you want is for someone to listen. Have a look back over the last 18 pages and see if there's anything there that will help you. We're all on the same road & I'm looking forward to getting to know you all. Hope you're all ok. Best wishes x

    Hi Tiff,

I hope you don't mind us coming on here, we got talking on Friday night and said that we would like somewhere to chat about stuff regularly, so I started a thread, then we found this one and joined up.

It is just nice to get together with people who understand how you are feeling and don't think you are loopy (although maybe I am!!).

Anyway, looking forward to getting to know you and the others on this thread.

    Thanks,

  • Hi again.

Back to the LSE report. You can access it from here:

    http://cep.lse.ac.uk/research/mentalhealth/

Scroll down to Key Research Papers and click on The Depression Report: A New Deal for Depression and Anxiety Disorders. It's a PDF document so you'll need Adobe. You can download this for free off the internet if you don't have it.

Please do read this document. It's well written and very accessible and it addresses many of the points which have been raised on this thread. I believe some of the key points in the report are:

    * The fact that treating depression is actually fairly cheap in relation to the time and money lost through people suffering from this illness. The report estimates that at least half of the people suffering from depression could be cured at a cost of £750.

    * 40% of disability is due to mental illness.

    * Depression, and not poverty, is the biggest single cause of misery in our community.

    * Depression and anxiety attracts only 2% of NHS expenditure.

    * The cost of absenteeism to the taxpayer is £7 billion per year (remember, this is a report by the London School of Economics).

    * The report estimates that we need an extra 10,000 therapists to meet current needs - 5,000 should be clinical psychologists, 5,000 should be psychological therapists.

    * If the government proceeded with these ideas, a new service could be in place in seven years.

The report concludes that those who read the report should make their concerns known, in the first event, by writing to their MP. If you don't know who your MP is, click here http://www.theyworkforyou.com/ and enter your postcode. (By the way, this is an excellent resource for checking up on what your MP actually does!)

I hope this doesn't read like a political broadcast - I just found the report very interesting reading. And, if the people who are suffering don't make a noise, who else will?

I will be writing to my MP later on this week. I will draft a letter for anyone else to copy, if you would like me to do this.

If Martin can help us all get out of our financial messes, we can help ourselves with depression and anxiety.

    Are you in?

:rotfl: Have a read of the post, Slayerx. I've mentioned that I'm going to write to my MP about the report and I wondered if anyone else wanted to. If anyone isn't sure about what to write, I've offered to draft a letter and post it later on in the week if enough people are interested. All you need to do then is copy the letter, address it to your MP, sign it and post it.

You should at least get a reply from your MP as a result. I'd like to see those replies posted on here!
