Funnily enough all I hear is excuses about this snow. The majority seem capable of making it to work etc. Convenient how they all live in these parallel universes were travel is just made more difficult by snow.
The manager was sacked as he demanded a driver took a load and returned with another one a round trip of 150 miles, the driver had 30 minutes of allowed duty left on his tacho, so legally couldn't comply. Manager started pushing and prodding driver, who then decked him, union and other drivers backed him against manager.0 -
Our work have sent an e-mail round this morning saying that if you haven't made it in today or don't tomorrow, then you have to work this weekend to make it up. Are they allowed to do that? To me it seems that they're encouraging people to drive in very dangerous conditions (the factory is in the middle of nowhere, hills all around, 1ft+ of snow this morning) so that they can still get their weekend. And what if it's still bad at the weekend?!?
I decided that it would be fruitless to try and get in this morning, so have my laptop and am working from home. Hopefully they'll accept that and that means I don't need to come in at the w/e (although I've only got so much I can do from home, I probably need to be back in the office from tomorrow!).0 -
I think a lot of this is caused by schools. I think there are a lot of people that think oh well the schools are off so I might as well be.
We had really bad snow a few years ago in Norwich and lots of cars were getting stuck and you really could not drive anywhere.
I lived about an hour to hour and a half from work and I would have walked if I had no other choice.
It is actually suprising how many people make it in to do some shopping on days where there is bad weather but cant make it to their workplace. A fair few of them seem to be teachers.
As a teacher I'd like to point out that we are only off if the school is closed - a decision which is made by management and done on the basis of the children's safety. My school was closed today, even though I could have got in, because the school bus company wasn't running buses due to dangerous roads. Had it been open I would have been in school working.
That said, I am enjoying my day off!0 -

I can't see how they can, espically as they were the ones who told you not to come in. What does your contract say..?.0 -
I work in a large office and nearly everyone (everyone but 8) had to phone in this morning due to the snow. Cars are trapped, no buses and no trams. They are now talking about forcing everyone to work the hours back, can they do this? It wasnt like we didnt want to come in or tried, it was impossible to make it. And now having to work back 8 hours (thats if it isnt bad tomorrow), its going to be a struggle for a lot of people.
Hope this is the right place to post, I've looked around the internet but couldnt find a suitable forum and this place sprang to mind.
Department I work in hired 4 wheel drives to pick up staff who couldn`t get into work, whilst other departments were sent home yesterday and told not to come in today. My department takes calls for Joe Public and you all know how aggressive they can be!0 -

A primary school in my area, was open today (one of very few), and about 22 children off the estate went in, the Head was outside in the playground with the children doing science experiments on the snow, all well wrapped up against the cold, and all having a great time.
Myself and some volunteers gritted the road past the school yesterday, so it was passable with care, the council kept away, and cancelled the bin collection. Ergo it is unsafe for the pedestrian, so elf'n safety dictates it is unsafe for a council worker to shovel some grit0 -

Once again, you've proved how accurate you are. You seem to post nothing but ill-judged inaccurate tripe with malicious intent.0 -
as someone who walks to work, whatever the weather, and having been the only one in for several days due to snow, i think snow days should be unpaid or the hours worked to make up. i dont get any thanks for turning in, its expected and its getting to be a very sore point now.0

Seems reasonable - why should you get a free day off work, while your colleagues had to work? That is discriminatory against them, simply because they live close enough to get into work.0
