Being forced to work hours back - snow

I work in a large office and nearly everyone (everyone but 8) had to phone in this morning due to the snow. Cars are trapped, no buses and no trams. They are now talking about forcing everyone to work the hours back, can they do this? It wasnt like we didnt want to come in or tried, it was impossible to make it. And now having to work back 8 hours (thats if it isnt bad tomorrow), its going to be a struggle for a lot of people.

Hope this is the right place to post, I've looked around the internet but couldnt find a suitable forum and this place sprang to mind.

I think you will find that's normal if you are unable to take it as a day's leave.
My other half is going into work early every day for two weeks to make up for a day he could not get in.

It may depend on what type of contract you have and the type of work you do.
EG in an office staff are often saleried, so although paid for a number of hours, this is actually paid as a set yearly/monthly amount. In those sort of jobs it is common to just cover the hours and pay them anyway.
I worked in an office a few years back where they gave staff who turned up the minimum hours for the day (on a flexi clock), but the staff who actually turned up got a 1/2 day "bonus" on the clock for travel and the trouble of coming in. all still got the same pay.

However if you worked in say a shop and were paid per hour, and the shop was still open I can see they would ask you to make up the time or take less pay.
Unless your contract says something about adverse weather conditions and or the actual workplace was shut it is usually down to the discression of the managers. It may also depend on how far away someone lives after all it would not be unreasonable for someone to wrap up and walk in the snow up to say 10-15 mins, but not fair to ask someone to walk an hour.

Last year our staff had the choice of not being paid or using holiday days, you might ask if these options are open to you.
I understand that people that get paid when unable to get to work due to the weather are the lucky few and there is no automatic right to being paid under these circumstances.

Two questions: What kind of office work do you do? And is there anything you could do from home?

I started a new job yesterday and couldnt get my car off the drive. The good thing is that I work within feasible walking distance from home and rang this morning to say that I was going to be late.

However, they have shut my office down today because only 3 out of 20 staff managed to get in.

The good thing is that I can do a lot of my work from home!

Other than the islands there is no place were transport is impossible. You and your colleagues just can't be bothered doing a bit of extra effort/planning/travel.

What a load of rubbish.

If you don't drive/don't have a car, and the buses and trains aren't running, how are you supposed to get to work? Walk? That's fine for people close by, but for those further away, it is just plain silly and time consuming to expect them to come in. And, even if you did have a car, it is not advisable/safe to drive in such conditions.

Trains and buses are running though.... Or what about a taxi? or lift ? or walk?

There may be delays but very very few complete cancellations of both.

Maybe the OP wants to tell us where she is travelling from and too so we can see this cut off area

well the weather is forecast to get worse and where I am there is 7 inches of snow and I have to travel to Liverpool from Warrington tomorrow and I will at least be making an effort
