Being forced to work hours back - snow

Don't be too cynical of those who can't get in just because your route was clear. OH has gone in this morning (first day of shift pattern) and has found all uphill sections particularly bad. If your route it level, fine, but any uphill section on somebody elses route will be proving difficult. Please forgive me if my comments seem abrupt or my questions have obvious answers, I have a mental health condition which affects my ability to see things as others might.0

Interesting thread. I have been lucky in that I have had to take 2 days off due to the school being closed but only had to use one days holiday. I was fully prepared to take two days holiday as I had to stay home to look after my children, but it woulod seem that my colleages, some of whom have no parental responsibility and live within walking distance of the office also stayed at home for one day. Other colleague who live a good 30 minutes drive out in the sticks also stayed home. I told my boss that if I was prepared to take both days as holiday then my colleagues who stayed home should also have to use holidays. Interestingly it didn't occur to any of my colleagues to even offer to take it as a holiday and my boss agreed that to be fair across the board I would only have to use one day (I was off for 2 days). This was more than fair but it did peeve me off that my colleagues didn't even offer.
My DH made it into work on Wednesday in horrendous weather only to be sent home again. He is still being paid but an argument raged yesterday with other colleagues who didn't even bother to make the journey in (some live in the same City as us so there is really no excuse) who felt that they should still be paid. My DH argued that wasn't fair since he actually made the effort to get to work and they didn't why should they get paid for failing to turn in?0 -
I've been snowed in and working from home by remote access (internet/phone).
My company offers a choice of working from home, making up the hours or taking leave. I don't think anyone expects a 'free day'. We are at the beginning of our holiday year, so everyone has some annual leave remaining.
What I don't think would be acceptable - and I think is possibly illegal - is forcing employees to take upaid leave without offering any other options. This comes under 'unauthorised deductions from wages'.0 -
what about taking unauthorised leave!!!
i think like the weather, this debate will run on and on0 -
hi,
ive had 3 days off because of the snow and i am working over time to make the time back. (which i was adviced was the policy). however, i was told that if i didnt get in because of the snow again then it would be a 'problem'. so today we have more snow, ive tried twice to get into work but the road into the town was at a complete standstill. I waited for over an hour without moving so turned round to come back home. Would anyone know if i can be sacked for this?0 -
babybear you should not be sacked for this but they could start a disciplinary procedure, ie. a formal warning for taking time off. Employers have to go down a disciplinary route of giving so many warnings before things become a sackable offence, unless it's a case of gross misconduct which I honestly don't think they could class this as.
How about you give it another go this afternoon? If it's anything like my area the problem is usually not snow but people in vehicles panicking and creating chaos that needn't be created.0 -
This is always interesting isn't it - we have a very small office staff level - and the one or two of us who work locally including a director get in because we can walk or our roads aren't gridlocked as much as further out of the town - so for the umpteenth time since begining of Jan we have some unable to get in - but they still get paid - we don't get anything extra for being here -0

raise a grievance and ask for extra if they are being paid for the time off and its not holiday payAlways ask ACAS0 -
I would too stagey. I would ask for extra days leave to cover it.0
