I suppose we'll have to have a new sofa/armchair. Where is cost effective?

We have a Sofa and armchair in the living room which is about 15 years old. It's dark blue/green. Surprisingly, it isn't badly sunken, despite having DH & I, DS (now 10) and 2 spaniels make use/abuse of it.
I did think it could do with a clean, althogh was worried that the fabric might not be up to being cleaned.
Anyway, over christmas a small hole has appeared in one side. This promises to get bigger quite quickly, esp as DS can't resist poking the stuffing back in with his finger every time he sits down on it.
Can't get lose covers to fit it, as the sofa is a 'chaise longue' style, the back and arm being higher at one end than the other. I could make do short-term with a couple of throws, but only if I can find summink dark blue, and inexpensive. I know throws will get on my nerves quite soon, as DS and the dogs will get tangled in them all the time (deliberately in DS's case).
So, We're going to have to bite the bullet and go out and buy a new set. Don't want to (can't) spend too much on them, don't want leather. Looked at DFS (thinking about the free credit), but they don't seem to do anything in dark blue or dark green, and I can't bear the baigey colours they seem to specialise in.
Any ideas, near-ish to Nottingham ??
BTW I know it sounds snobby, but don't like the idea of second-hand.

I try not to get too stressed out on the forum. I won't argue, i'll just leave a thread if you don't like what I say.

Did you look online or go instore?
The leather sofa i just bought from them is available in dark blue, but the blue isn't on the website, I think you do get a better choice in store.
Don't get one from argos

If it hasn't sunk it's a good sprung one - many new settees aren't very good. You may find getting it professionally cleaned & repaired will be a better option? Or even getting it re-covered, if you still like it?0

I wouldn't recommend a sofa from DFS

We bought a sofa from there 6yrs ago and its not in a great shape at all especially considering the £1900 sale price tag  Its bad in all ways, fabric/seat supports everything the only good thing surprisingly is the leather outer of it. If you look through search for DFS you'll see many many complaints.
I would have a look around some local stores that are independent I am sure you'll find a bargain there or if its very cheap you want look on eBay a few people rave about the seller selling sofas on there- just check out feedback etc first and some have showrooms you can visit.
Anyway good luckWife to a great husband and mum to 4 fantastic kids 9,8,4,3 they drive me mad but I would do anything and give everything for my family :grinheart

Got a chair from IKEA that I like, although others have said they don't like them.
Recovering sounds like the best option.0 -
Definitely look into having the furniture professionally re-upholstered and recovered if it's of good quality and after 15 years of family-use I think it is. I think it would probably turn out to be less expensive than buying new. Please don't be snobby about second-hand: I bought two fantastic sofas on ebay for £50 and £100 each of a much higher quality than I could have ever afforded new and they were in perfect condition and still are two years later.
Cheap sofas are cheap for a reason. Buying from somewhere like DFS on their rubbish "interest-free" deal could mean you haven't finished paying for them by the time they've fallen apart.0 -

Actually, the one that needs replacing was a DFS (we used to live just across the road from their big showroom at Darley Dale). I'm surprised it has survived as long as it has, but don't think it's worth re-covering.
I accept their quality may have declined in the last 15 years.
I was planning to take the free credit, spend the first (pay nothing) year shoving money into the BS every month, and pay in full once the monthly payments were due to start. I've played that game before.I try not to get too stressed out on the forum. I won't argue, i'll just leave a thread if you don't like what I say.

My suite is 15 years old and a cream damask fabric. I got it at a local retailer for a surprisingly good price as it was so pale it had not sold. It is still in very good condition. The fabric was originally Scotchguarded but I have stripped the covers off the cushions a couple of times and washed them. Every week, I move the cushions and backs around one place IYKWIM. This evens out the wear. The shop where I bought it actually manufactured the suite and I had them make me arm covers in the same fabric. These get washed quite often. When I have guests, I take them off and the arms are perfect underneath.
There is only my husband and myself in the house now although I have small grandchildren who visit frequently. I try to confine drinks to the kitchen!
I am considering replacing it as the style is a bit dated now. I will shop local again though. I would never consider one of the stores which advertise constantly on the telly. They have to pay for the adverts and the cheap credit somehow!0 -
I haven't seen any of these 'local furniture shops' everyone's on about!
We've got a shop that sells the indian hardwood bookcases etc at double the going rate - but only second hand sofa shops

We got one from here: https://www.sofasofa.co.uk
There was a mix up with the delivery date which I wasn't happy about, but once we got the actual sofas, I fell in love with them! They're really well made and very comfortable and I've got no complaints. Plenty visitors have commented how comfy they are too. Here I go again on my own....0 -
