If you are really struggling to follow or implement all the advice you have been given then you really only have 3 options as I see it

1 Take it into a pc repair shop who should be able to wipe all passwords in about 5 minutes
2 Do a clean re install of windows, but lose all data
    3 Buy new pc

or alternatively thrash the one responsible to within an inch of his life or until they tell you the password, whichever comes first.

totally agree its obviously beyond him me thinks possiably child has seen said password poss keylogger and is having a joke or corrputed the file the safest and easyest thing to would be a fresh install and when doing so always create 2 admin accounts for this very reason so in the event of this not becoming a problem.
I would have suggested hirens boot cd but judging on the ability to create a boot iso image cd it prob just be safer for the fresh install option in this case

    Thanks!

    Yes I am struggling!!

It now wont boot past the point of the Vista basic Page with th Admin and User Icons. The mouse is frozen and will not respond to any commands. Can not boot into F2 or F8.

1 or 2 are the best options, 2 slightly problematic as no Vista discs provided!

The alternative of thrashing to within an inch (why stop there?) appeals. Apparently the Mrs was using the PC in the Admin account and it crashed because of low battery. Then when she switched back on this password problem occurred.

That version is for XP, no doubt though it is possible for Vista too.

However, what concerns me is how to get past the first vista screen where one is supposed to choose which account to log into? How will the soft ware account for which user name to use?

Think I am best just having Vista reinstalled for £30!

Thanks all for your help, much appreciated.

No manual and can only sign into a parentally controlled user account that wont let me do anything without a password to the admin account.
