    The people who jump through the hoops and get their flights for a penny or a pound will continue to book; but there is no profit coming from them.

    The people who get stung subsidise the penny flights, but how often can you sting them, and for how much until they stop using Ryanair.

    It has to end in tears at some point.

    BMI Baby charges even more than Ryanair for hold baggage, their prices are hardly transparent either.

    easyjet, well they have managed to cancel more flights in the last few weeks than all of the other low cost carriers put together.

  • Dear MSE and Friends,

    It amuses me hearing about the RyanAir story, about their corporate greediness, on the same day THEIR JET was holding up the departing runway at Gatwick last Saturday, January 2, 2010 and holding up my Easyjet and numerous OTHER airlines from landing safely at Gatwick because RYANAIR had failed to take off after numerous instructions from Air Traffic Control.

    I thought Easyjet was bad, now I think Easyjet are good and close to 'fair'.

    RyanAir customers come to Easyjet.
    RyanAir need to look at its brand and its damaged reputation before DARING to add these puerile and childish fares to the already struggling traveller.

    And to be fair, speaking of fair, RyanAir's prices have always been much dearer than Easyjet and others.

    So what exactly, especially now, is Ryanair's competitive advantage and value proposition over AND above its competition?!?!

    Bring on Easyjet!

    As much as I've hated the change to Mastercard Prepaid, I know it's going to save me in excess of £240 per year to be able to fly.

    If anyone is against them so much, then just don't fly with them. Most I've ever been delayed is 45minutes and I never fly for more than £30 return nowdays. Never had a bad experience on board a flight and the staff have been more than curteous throughout.

    If people read what they are paying for before clicking that purchase now button (and then yes again to confirm) then they hardly have a way of coming back and saying they weren't advised of anything as it's the person booking who should be reading what they agreed to.

    And the point is, the Free, £1, £2, £5 etc flights are actually available if you play by their rules, of which I'm more than happy to do.
  • Funnily enough, all these guest posters claiming RYANAIR IS DOOMED - perhaps they might like to explain why Ryanair is currently sitting on 2.5 BILLION Euro in cash? Not in anything else - they actually have 2.5 billion in cash available to them.

    Funnily enough, all these guest posters claiming RYANAIR IS DOOMED - perhaps they might like to explain why Ryanair is currently sitting on 2.5 BILLION Euro in cash? Not in anything else - they actually have 2.5 billion in cash available to them.

    From some recent TV coverage I understand that Ryanair wants to buy aircraft, Airbus knows they do not stand a chance (because they are more expensive than Boeing), and Boeing are not offering him the discounts he wants.

    He did manage to get a really good deal post 9/11, so he was saying if they wouldn't sell the jets at the right price then he would give the money to the shareholders.

    Also some of these small airports have been squeezed so far by the airline, that they are no longer interested.

    2.5 Billion Euros,

    How far will that go when the only people willing to fly are the bargain hunters?

    What happens when you have a large fleet flying nowhere?

    Money today does not buy you safety for the future, that requires continued revenue from profitable customers.

    Anyway, it doesn't matter what either of us think at the moment, it's the future that will sort this out.

  • This is rather depressing.

    The head of the Office for Fair Trading had identified that this is clearly not fair trading. So what action does this fearsome upholder of our rights do to prevent the breach of fair trading? He gets out his school playground dictionary & calls it 'funny game', 'puerile' 'childish'. O'Leary must be quaking in his boots.

    The head of OFT must either take immediate & decisive action or resign & make way for a more dynamic leader who will do his job & take action. If he thinks it's almost legal now, what action is he taking to make it illegal?

    If you allow retailers to charge multiple times for one card transaction, no advertised price will be reliable. If Ryanair can charge 10 card transaction fees for the one card transaction when a family takes a weekend flight, then Azda can sell a 50p box of Jaffa Cakes for £100.50 (inc 20 x £5transaction fees). There no difference.

    I'd suggest it's illegal now. If Ryainair advertise £5 flights in 10ft letters, with only a few days to book. Perhaps 99+% of people reading that advert can't get it. They don't own the obscure card & can never buy one in time. I'd have thought that advert is against current advertising standards & should read £10 flight (less £5 card discount).

    Ryanair have publicly announced that they won't be buying new aircraft after talks broke down with Boeing. They won't go with Airbus - the problems of dual fleets are very well known. Boeing may still do a deal with Ryanair - their orders are *massively* down in the last quarter, and there's definite prestige in getting more orders from one of Europe's biggest airline.

    Apparently they're going to pay a dividend in three years time, but no-one believes this - still, O'Leary's greatest asset is the ability to keep absolutely everyone guessing and speculating as to just what Ryanair are planning.

    There are always more airports. Many smaller airports such as Glasgow Prestwick would be finished without Ryanair, such is their dominant presence there.

    You've forgotten that for many people, Ryanair is the main carrier to many destinations. Ryanair in the UK is more of a "holiday" type carrier - but for many Europeans, Ryanair is *the* national airline which operates direct flights from their city to major European destinations.

    You've also got to remeber that Ryanair has plenty of choice within Europe - maybe the market is saturated in the UK, but look at their Italian domestic network for instance - there's still *plenty* of demand. Let's not forget that they haven't even tapped up routes such as Wroclaw-Lviv.
    Money today does not buy you safety for the future, that requires continued revenue from profitable customers.

    Ryanair are on track to make a profit this year - so that's even more cash in the bank. The success in their business lies in constantly evolving - which is why they regularly slaughter most of their competition.

    Oh and of course, which airline has cancelled most flights this year so far?
