My now one and only piece of advice is stop buying anything!! Maybe you need to read this book ~ How I lived on a pound a day. You dont need material things/makeup/xbox's/Paul Burton bags (another thread) etc to enjoy life. Life is what you make it! If you lost your job tomorrow and you didnt get one for another year I am sure you will survive and have as much fun as you do now.

Quit living the dream life on a student/part time salary, mature, take some responsibilty and think about the future!

I've read that book and it was a real eye opener - not too sure how far I'd get if I tried to hitch hike to France though!
  • LPS have a think about how much you have paid to your debts over the past few months. Have they actually gone down at all and do you even have any of the things you bought. If you only pay the minimum payment the debts will NEVER go down.

Set up direct debits for after your Morrisons pay day to at least pay the minimums (then you won't get late payment fees) and then each month pick a debt to throw any extra money at.

Get extra hours at work and make sure your boss knows you could do Sundays or whatever. (I used to work at Morrisons so I know).

Keep your receipts (we keep ours in an envelope) until your bank statement comes and check it off. Banks do make mistakes and no one else will check for you.

Sell on Ebay and don't buy any more cosmetics or toiletries (what you have should last for ages).

Also take your food in to work or uni. You could fill up a bottle with squash each day instead of buying one. Does your canteen have a microwave you can use. Then you could take something in to warm up.

Think about how good you will feel to pay things off and be able to spend your own cash.

    Good luck

This really does work and is a good idea. I work next to a Sainsburys and the amount of times I would go and withdraw a tenner from the cash machine and then spend it on lunch and rubbish was extraordinary!

I now take a packed lunch and don't even spend any money at lunchtime which is brilliant. In the winter a nice tin/sachet of soup with a breadbun is filling in case you get sick of sandwiches likes I do. Occasionally towards the end of the week, I'll maybe pop over to get a banana when I'm starting to get low on fruit at home and that's it!

It really does make a difference from spending about £40-£50 a week to about 50p and you'll soon notice it when you actually haven't got to account for £50.00 being spent on rubbish. :D
  • Yes MellyB I quite agree. I just hope she will start to listen to all the great advice she has been given.
  • I only work 3-4 hour shifts, so i either dont get a break or get 15mins. Which is only long enough to go out for a quick smoke, touch up my make up and pee.
I was getting a few extra shifts, but all the hours have been cut, so back to just 9 hours a week. and i can't sell the hatboxes. one is mine and i have used all the products in it, and you cant sell used products on ebay. The other one is my mums. Which she is keeping till shes finished everything in her other one shes using just now.

And it's pauls boutique. not paul burton. and my friend bought me onw for starting uni, to say she was proud of me!

I don't really buy anything at uni either. as im only in 2-3 hours a day (well i dunno what my new timetable will be like yet)

I can't set up a DD, cause i get paid at a differnt date very month, and i'm scared by the time that comes around there will be nothing in my bank

lps, your replies remind me of my clients when i worked as a drug and acholol worker ( for 15 years) some ppl realised they had a problem would listen to the advice they were gven and made the changes they needed to no matter how uncomfortable or difficult thoses changes were, you remind me of those who admitted that they had a problem but would continually give excuses as to why they couldn't do anything about it , how it wasn't their fault etc, this is your life live it as you want i don't give a flying fig to be honest there are ppl contemplating killing themselves because of how bad there lives are at present and you go on about hatboxes grow up

  • I don't know what else to suggest to you then but you will go round and round in circles until you either find more hours/second job or stop spending so much.
  • Littlepinkstars I have read bits & pieces of the other threads you've posted over the last 6 months or so & I can see why some of the other posters are getting quite frustrated here.

None (or not many of us!) on here are angels, having all been in debt at some point but it does seem quite disheartening to see you get all this great advice that you just ignore, as another poster said I too am making notes of them & will try some of these tips, even if you dont!!

I still lived at home at 23 years too, and because of ill health I was in no rush to leave my home comforts, lol. However 4 years down the line I now live with my boyfriend, I still have a little bit of debt but am confident it will be clear by summer if not the end of this year, thanks mainly to the tips I have picked up from this wonderful site. My debt was mainly built up, like yours, on gig tickets, holidays, clothes and going out... though it wasnt as high as yours I wish I had knuckled down and cleared it before leaving home & the bills start rolling in! You have a great opportunity to do this, if you just stop spending!

I know you say you have no interest in moving out now but I promise you will no doubt feel differently in just a few years. It may be all well and good to go and stay with your friend for some 'space' but even if you dont ever foresee yourself getting married what if in a few years your friend decides to settle down & start a family etc - I cant imagine her & partner being too thrilled about you dossing on their sofa for weeks at a time then!! You are in danger of being left behind while your peers move on & make lives for themselves if you dont reign in your spending now.

Do yourself a favour and listen to the advice you are being given, everybody means well and we just dont want to see you back here in a few years with double the amount of debt and no hope in hell of paying it off.

    Best of luck

p.s sorry for the long post :o
