I'm struggling badly too, but just to throw some thoughts out there -

'Where wind rocks the pulpit and Wellington lay"

Wellington lay in state in the chapel of the Royal Chelsea Hospital, but can't find anything about windy pulpits or round about writers there. It would seem the most obvious lead to me though.

'The stand then where stood fell with a heavenly job'

Is it possible 'Fell' is a person, possibly Margaret Fell a leader in the Quaker movement? I can't find anywhere obvious she stood though, apart from when petitioning in London

    The male U.S / V.S. ? man
This U/V doesn't match any of the other Us or Vs in the text so I don't know which it is. US would seem most likely, but you never know with this quiz

    'a mark to bring safety...'
maybe the Kite Mark? The BSI headquarters are in Chiswick, London

I am thinking Wellington was buried at St Paul's, and there was a famous open-air pulpit there at some point.

Can't find any good references to a round about writer around St Paul' though , although - and this is a long shot :o - it's not that far from Shakespeare's Globe (round :o). There is a sonnet XLVII which starts with "betwixt" :j but no Dennis or snob in it so I'm stuck there :o:rolleyes:

Hard to get anything firm with this one. Here are some (disconnected) points from my jottings - they might give someone an idea.

    1. Wellington had a state funeral so would probably have 'lay' in Westminster Hall before burial in St. Pauls.

    2. St. Pauls was open air at one time, and amazingly the top item in one of my googles was the St.Paul's choir 'rocking' - singing Blowin' In The Wind!

    3. William Makepeace Thackeray wrote 'The Roundabout Papers' , from 1830 he wrote 'The Snob Papers' which were collected as 'The Book of Snobs' popularising the word. He later wrote 'Pendennis' and 'Denis Duval'. In between (in 1847) he wrote 'Vanity Fair' (links to Pilgrim's Progress and possibly 'Heavenly Job' ?).

    4. Did Mr. Stood fall, or did Mr. Fell stand?

    5. I was looking at Plimsoll for the safety mark.

    6. 'Put the creature with child in' could lead to inserting a word or anagram into a reversed room.

    7. Moor is the obvious reversed room, but don't discount others. 'Hall' could give somewhere in Wales!

    8. Is the creature one you could ride eg. Horse?

    Good luck people!

All I can come up with is the following:

Wellington lay in state in the royal chelsea hospital before burial.

Dr Samuel Johnson's house is not too far from st pauls where Wellington lays.

"US MALE" = anagram of Samuel. Samuel Plimsoll's safety mark around the hull (Hull?).

Answer ?/? Moor or ?/? Hull???

"THEN RIDE TO THE END AND JUST HOPE YOU COME FIRST" : "JUST" maybe = fair? Any famous fairs/horse fairs around here? "RIDE" = something to do with Ridings of Yorkshire??

"CREATURE WITH CHILD" = maybe STORK??

I think XLV11 is 47 - no idea how that ties in to anything else though
