Sorry for the loss but it sounds like you went into it just looking for an argument which made your experience a lot more difficult.

Why would I want to do that ? All I want to do is get the situation sorted out with the minimum of hassle.
I've had to deal with dozens of organisations over the course of three deaths in the last 10 years.
Some organisations are good, some are awful.
HSBC for example were good and had a procedure that put them on top of the situation.
    Barclays were unbelievably bad.

There are 2.000 people a day dying in Britain, so I would expect every major organisation to at least train its staff to to realise that different rules apply when someone is dead or bankrupt. Then transfer the caller to a specialist who understands the situation.
  • Hello, I too have had my identity stolen. They used my credit card and set up a 'Very' account as well - spending at the £250 mark. All on bloody baby clothes - and I have a particular dislike for babies! I am very curious at to where they got my details from and I have narrowed it down to a few places - so would be very interested to know if I there is any overlap with anyone else on that.

Also they had my DOB, but they could have possibly got that from companies house.
  • Ok - Quick update... I've done some investigation and I'm pretty sure that my details were compromised by either John Lewis on-line or Boots on-line or less likely Next.co.uk. I don't think they would have got my card no by hacking as they can't display the card number (apart from last few digits) - I think it must be an inside job.
  • Yes that is funny :).

Might I just point out that I consider myself to be quite careful about the internet - especially as I work in the credit card industry. And it looks like I haven't been careful enough! All of these places hold my DOB and I didn't realise it - and 2 of them aren't credit accounts - so they have no reason to need my DOB. Just a warning to others out there - don't give your DOB anywhere that doesn't have a valid reason to need it!

with regards to Very in particular - they granted credit to the fraud account (see my previous post) with a completely bogus DOB and first name - so their 'checks' are at best unfit for purpose and certainly not rigorous. So I wouldn't get hung up about your DOB in this case - I'm pretty sure they could have perpetrated the theft without 'your' details.

It looks like there is a new wave of Very.co.uk fraud - yesterday parcels were sent to my friend's address, then a very plausible person turned up saying he was from very.co.uk and had been sent to retrieve them because a fraudulent account had been set up at her address. She took details of the delivery note inside and handed them back, only later realising that the claim to be acting against fraud could have been the scam itself. She's contacted very.co.uk and is contacting bank/card providers to check. Has anyone heard of anything like this? Will update you on the result.

I received a statement from Very.co.uk today for nearly 700 quid!!!

I have never opened an account with them nor do I want to. I don't do credit if at all possible. I have been in a queue waiting for my call to be answered for over 35 minutes now - seems they are very busy in the fraud department!

I will report what has been said just as soon as someone answers me.

*update* No one answered and the office is now closed. I will get onto this tomorrow and report back.

There is nothing wrong with credit and provided managed sensibly it can make life easier.

My wife received an unsolicited bill for zero amount from very.co.uk and congratulations on setting up an account with a credit limit of £3k. When we called them to report it they requested date of birth which we refused to supply - what is the point? We know we haven't requested the account so, whatever we give will not match their records and all we'll achieve is giving out information which we want to keep private. Any advice? Thanks. Paul

When we called back they asked for DOB but we said we just wanted to speak to the fraud department and were given a number. They did not ask for anything else other than name and account number and were extremely helpful and professional

Call them back and give them the date of birth, why wouldn't you want to give it ? It will probably confirm to them that the account is nothing to do with your wife.
  • My previous landlord brought me a bunch of letters which arrived to his address half a year after I moved out. They were all from Very.co.uk - 1st letter thanking me for placing the order (which I never did) worth £450 (december 2012), 2nd letter is thanking me for using Collect+ as a delvery option instead of home address and all the subsequent letters are statements of my credit with Very.co.uk and additional charges for late payments. (now is march 2013).
I called them first thing in the morning next day to report the fraud - they cancelled the account and registered this case as ID Theft and also tried to offer me to use equifax Credit Report services - which i believe cost aroun 6£ a month.

I'm quite disappointed with the situation- someone clearly used this loophole in VERY services and also had my personal information- my name, previous address and date of birth.
On top of this they were trying to sell me the equifax services on the back of this fraud...
