Do you not hold a passport or drivers licence?
The CIFAS marker applied is a Cat 2, which indicates your a victim of identity fraud. So it's all well they are asking for ID.
no, never had a passport or drivers licence

if you have been a victim of ID theft, most likely that's the reason why they are requiring you a proof of identification. why don't you have a licence or passport? just asking...

Depending on where you live you can apply for an Identity card for £30.

You do need to hold a current passport though to get one which kind of defeats the object.

Like kathrynt I don't drive and haven't been abroad since 1999 so don't need a passport. Was looking to get the ID card so I'd have some widely accepted photo ID and just in case I ever decided to travel within Europe but that plan was scuppered by the requirement to have a passport

Ah apologies, I failed to see you need a valid passport, it does kind of cancel itself out then! :-/

The "widely accepted" part is open to debate!

And personally I think anyone who'd sign up for one of these needs their bumps felt (I appreciate this is a wholly subjective POV). ;)

Been some confusion with them then :D

Best not get one anyway, as from that article the last paragraph suggests they will be scrapped come June anyway

I too suspect that if Labour find themselves calling Pickfords in a couple of months time, the new tennants will ahve better things to do with the £12 billion! Going off last estimates!

I also had a fraudulent application made at VERY with my initial & maiden name used, but at my mum's address, with a made up DOB. First we knew was that mum had a letter at my old home address from VERY fraud dept asking someone with my initial & maiden name to contact them. She asked me to do this as she is was worried re implications - I was reluctant to do this at first as I thought it was a phone scam for a premium rate number - see how you guys have got me paranoid !!:). After this letter came a statement saying 14 transactions totaling about £750. I then phoned them. Strange thing about this is that I haven't lived at that address for 20 years and haven't gone by my maiden name for the same period. People at Very couldn't be more helpful, I told them situation and asked what name & DOB had be given on the app - the initial stood for a completely different name (and sex !) and the dob was 10 years off mine with no digits in common. I asked them to register it on CIFAS as a type 2 (if I recall) which states that a fraudulent app has been made in my name or address, but that I was a victim. I also asked for a marker to be placed on my mum's address - although she never uses credit.

To put the original poster's mind at rest about implictions of the CIFAS marker....I made an on-line application for the current Virgin 0% bal transfer card last month, at the decision point it said there would be a delay & they'd be in touch. I had expected this. 2 days later I had a phone call from MBNA (Virgin) in Chester and spoke to a very pleasant lady who just confirmed that I had made the application - no problems, account granted. Just remember the blasted CIFAS password you set up - I hadn't:(, but we still muddled through.

I do find it incredible that Very issued this account in the first place though. I worked for IT in the Card sector for many years and for New Business the most minimal of checking would have found no electoral roll, no credit history - absolutely nothing. I suspect internal fraud - but I am still mystified by the use of my initial & maiden name 20 years+ since they were used.

And that's exactly how it should work.
