Giving wormers to cats

Hi guys,

Just wondering if you had any fool proof techniques for getting your cat to take a worming tablet?

We give ours drontal wormers, I've tried wrapping them in cheese but because the tablets are quite large they pick at the cheese and eventually discard the tablet:rolleyes:

I've tried cutting the tablets in half and giving them one piece at a time, but even though they don't smell to me, I think they must to the cats as they won't even go near them then. I've also tried one of those pill dispensers that you put in their mouth, it did work, but it wasn't the most pleasant experience for us or the cats so would rather find a better way!

If only they were as easy as our dog, he eats his wormers out of my hand - gannet:rotfl:

Thanks!

We use the liquid from the vets and squirt it into their mouth with a little syringe but to be fair it's not that pleasant as you have to pin them down and open their mouths- like when you give a tablet:rolleyes:

I use the Profender spot-on wormer. You have to buy from the Vet but well worth it.

    Much less stressful :D

I do the same. Small vial of liquid that I squeeze onto the skin at the back of his neck where he can't easily reach. I do the same with flea stuff but you have to leave a week or so between them, don't do them together (my vet said).

The link above is a very good way to give a cat a pill. Well tip #1 is :rotfl:Although I would recommend further treating the cat like a baby, by swaddling it in an old bath towel to cover the claws. It's over in minutes and cat will forgive you quite easily afterwards .

We do it like this too! She always seems to know when she sees us coming at her with a towel though! :D. Now I have seen that you can get drops, I might try that instead (they do work I presume?!) which would help take the stress out of it. :D

When I was looking after OH's cat, I noticed it had worms!! I got 3 tablets from the vet (drontal or the other one? Cant remember!) 1 for each cat (I only had 1 at the time) and 1 for spares!

OH's cat was a nightmare!!! Ate around the cheese, ran behind the sink in the bathroom for hours, she is quite a wild cat anyways, and her nails are SOOOO sharp from all the hunting and climbing probably. I had to hold her, and put it at the back of her throat and clamp her mouth shut, was horrible and she was foaming at the mouth because of it....shame, but I wasn't having anymore worms on my bed!!

My other cat was easy, I broke the pill up and sprinkled it over some whiskas temptations treats and she scoffed the lot :rotfl:

I've tried crushing the tablets and disguising them in something tasty.. but they always seem to eat around it. It's best to just do it the old fashioned way, hold their head with one hand and open their mouth with the other, and pop the pill straight down their throat. I always need chop the tablet in half though , as a whole one often comes back up again :)
Looks like there's plenty of videos on the web showing you how *not* to do it... rofl.

We use butter rather than cheese for our puppy - not sure if that is of any use for cats though!
