Moving From Virgin To BT

  • We have a similar situation.
We've just done three months with BT and have double checked our statements to find that Virgin have still been billing us for the same period. Virgin have said "you should have asked for a MAC Code" and BT say that their call reps will advise if you need to get one. Awaiting the call transcript from October 2011 to hear whether the advice was given. Apparently, it also matters whether the BT salesperson advises that you are being offered a "replacement broadband service" or a "New Broadband service".. As a result, we're £94 out of pocket to Virgin and now have a 10gb/month service instead of the unlimited Virgin service.. We are also keen to determine of the sales chatter involved mentioning the BT package is only 10gb/month (which is woefully inadequate if you have an internet radio!). Watch this space.
  • herbertpug If you were with Virgin cable for Broadband, as opposed to Virgin over a BT line, you don't need a MAC code as it's a new service with BT and they should have said so. You do have to cancel the service with Virgin yourself.
If you ported your phone number from Virgin to BT, then that part of your service is transferred automatically and your Virgin phone charges should be ceased. If it was a new BT number, you would have needed to cancel Virgin yourself. Once you were set up with BT, why didn't you cancel the Virgin DD if you thought you'd paid their final bill?
  • if your porting out from VM to BT only the phone will be taken and then stopped with VM (with VM you have to stop broadband and TV our self, as with VM each service is an independent from each other you can have broadband only with VM if you wish as it does not require an phone line as its not ADSL)

before you do move you should consider what speed your going to get with ADSL (samknows.com) as you mite suffer Very slow speeds (like me i can only get 1mb with ADSL unless BT get FTTC or FTTP where i am, i most likely never going to see me in my life time at this house)

if your simply wanting to rid that £60-£80 per month cancel the TV and keep the 10mb or 20/30mb (20mb or 60mb soon :) ) broadband its only £20-£35 (with or with out phone) you should find out what is making the bill high (i guess some one in the house is ringing mobile phone numbers or you have XL every thing TV-broadband-phone + sports or movies can make £80 easy)

and do not cancel the DD it makes more issues then you want (credit rating or/and they pass it onto collectors), once the phone and broadband was working with BT you then call VM to stop what ever services you wanted to stop or all
  • Well, after a week of "finding the recording of the sales call", today BT contacted us and advised that they had reviewed the recording of the sales patter. It transpires that the salesperson had not, on being asked "is there anything we need to do to xfer the service" advised "you will need to get a MAC code". Infact, had said it would all be done.... So BT acknowledge a training issue and we will not be financially inconvenienced. BT have been more helpful in this matter than our experiences 3+ years ago, so maybe they've bucked their ideas up. In response to previous comments: My other half, who authorized the migration, specifically asked if we were required to take any actions to facilitate the migration. Was advised "absolutely not". We took due diligence as far as appropriate. BT: Thanks for sorting out the problem.
