Moving From Virgin To BT

Any advice people on here can give me on this?

We ve been with these jokers for ten years and our monthly bill is £80 for two old age pensioners - This months my parents had a £120 bill

How do I cancel the contract with Virgin??

    You phone 150 and choose the option "leaving Virgin", tell them you would like to cancel and give 30 days notice. You can then follow it up in writing.

    However what exactly do you pay £80 a month to Virgin for - is it just phone or do you have other services such as TV or broadband?

    Do not cancel with Virgin Media... You could lose your telephone number if you do that. If you are wanting to switch your line to BT let BT handle the cancellation of your telephone line and port your number to them. If you have BB and TV with Virgin you will however need to cancel these with them.

    Any advice please?
    Tried to switch from Virgin to BT after calling BT. While I was on the phone setting it up BT rep said he would check to see if I could keep the number from Virgin and within seconds told me that Virgin would not release the number.

    Has this happened to anyone else?

    Cancelling is not the problem But if you are on Virgin Media (cable service) as opposed to Virgin National (ADSL service) then you will need a BT line installed before you can get a phone service from any other provider. VM is the only cable provider.
    No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

    It's a common provisioning issue.

    Whenever you move home or change telephony provider's,the phone number is provisioned ie assigned to you & the circuits in the exchange you are connected to.
    Sometimes when changing from VM to BT,BT to VM,BT to TT ect,they may not be able to port the number over to the new provider for a few reasons.
    One of them may be your number may already be in use by BT (It's complicated to explain) & whilst this wont affect you on VM,moving it to BT will.Or the number may be owned by VM & if they release it to BT,it's one less number they can use on their database.

    This has happened because you have not told Virgin you are leaving them.
    You need to contact Virgin yourself, not through a 3rd party (ie BT) , and tell them you are leaving and want to take your number with you to BT.
    Then contact BT, who will contact Virgin.
    Virgin will check, see that you have asked for this, and allow the number to be switched.

    Actually, looking at your post, replace the words 'You' with 'Your Parents' as it is them who have the contract.
    'You' can always pretend to be 'Your Parents' but that's a bit illegal !

    For explaining.. but I thought I saw a statement somewhere from Oftel along these lines ..
    "Under new legislation that has come into force, all telecoms operators and service providers are now required to let customers keep their telephone number when changing companies."

    Think I will give Virgin a call to see what their explanation is...(as suggested by "The Mighty Gusset") Although why BT did not tell me this I cannot understand ! just as I can't understand the rest of your message.

    why dont you call virgin and get your costs dropped?
    i dont pay anything near £80 a month with phone,20 meg BB and XL TV
