    Thanks The Mighty Gusset

Think I will give Virgin a call to see what their explanation is...(as suggested by "The Mighty Gusset") Although why BT did not tell me this I cannot understand ! just as I can't understand the rest of your message.

    Cheers

BT aren't allowed to tell you about rival company's products/policies - it's actually illegal for them to do so.

The other part of my post refers to who actually has the contract with Virgin - you say in your original post that it's your parents phone.
That means that your parents, not you, need to talk to Virgin.
Again, unless you have Power Of Attorney, it's illegal for Virgin to do anything simply on your say so - you are not their customer.
This is why, when you phone these companies up, they ask you a bunch of daft 'security' questions - to verify that you are actually the person who has the contract with them.
    Gus.

For explaining.. but I thought I saw a statement somewhere from Oftel along these lines ..
"Under new legislation that has come into force, all telecoms operators and service providers are now required to let customers keep their telephone number when changing companies."

    Thanks The Mighty Gusset

That may be the case since I left them. But the are circumstances that may prevent this.

    hi again
    Confusion sorted..

Re the parents ... think you got my message mixed up with the 1st poster -Joey - on this matter.

But really a big thanks for your help and I will contact Virgin.

    Cheers again
  • Can anyone help?

I was with Virgin Media for Home phone and broadband, but in December subscribed to BT for home phone and broadband instead. BT said they would handle the cancellation and I should not contact Virgin incase they cut me off before BT was installed.

I have now received a bill from BT (quite rightly so, they are now my provider) but I've also received a bill from Virgin for Broadband (over double what I used to pay!!).

I have phoned both companies, BT say they requested both phone and broadband under the same order so Virgin should have cancelled both services so it's Virgin's fault. Virgin say they only accept phone cancellations from third parties and not broadband cancellations, so it's BT's fault for giving me mis-information.

    Which company is right?!

    Its BT at fault .

When you port a number from Virgin to BT
this cuts off the phone with Virgin (as you cant have same number with 2 companies) and connects the line with BT. The Virgin broadband is not dependant on a Virgin phone line so if you cancel the Virgin line the broadband will stay active and will be a higher price because its no longer part of a bundle.
BT have misinformed you if they told you they would cancel the Virgin broadband as a number port only cancels the telephone line and not the broadband or tv ..BT may have placed an order for phone and broadband with BT but this will not cancel broadband with Virgin or any TV service you may have.
BT error so chase up with BT. probably best to email the issue via BT.com an explain whats happened. They should offer some compensation for costs incurred etc.

In one way, it doesn't matter. You are the customer, e.g. the contracted party, and the responsibility for cancellation ultimately remains yours, not BT's - rather like if you move your bank account the new bank may well offer to migrate regular payments for you, but you'd be well advised to verify that everything has been actioned correctly yourself.
