There are a lot of random people out there using social engineering skills to learn more about fellow people and an interest can turn in to an obsession.

Back to OP, sorry your story is sounding similar to a occurence that happened to someone I know.
I don't want to come across sounding harsh but it sounds to me that he is hitting a mid life crisis and is bordering to have having an affair, it certainly would of crossed his mind on doing so no matter what he says or does.
Talk it through with him, maybe spice up the usual routine a little. I wouldnj't post this if this hadn't happened to someone I know.
